    • A device for holding a surgical instrument having a body, an instrument engagement device and a knob. The body has a proximal end, a distal end and a passageway positioned through the body. The instrument engagement device is positioned in the passageway and has at least two prongs moveable relative to each other to hold the surgical instrument therebetween. The knob is preferably positioned on the proximal end of the body and operatively associated with the at least two prongs so that movement of the knob causes movement of the prongs. The prongs may further include at least one ridge for engaging at least one slot on the surgical instrument. The knob may further comprise a cap at its proximal end positioned and designed for impact, for example, by a hammer, to facilitate movement of the surgical instrument into the patient. The knob may also include a locking mechanism to fix the position of the prongs.

    • In a method of estimating a bit rate (f1) of a digital signal conveyed through a SONET network between an originating node and a terminating node, the digital signal received by the originating node is processed to determine a result of a first function of the signal bit rate (f1) and a respective Tx local reference frequency (f2) of the originating node. A result of a second function of the Tx local reference frequency (f2) and a respective Rx local reference frequency (f3) of the terminating node is calculated. Finally, a result of a third function of the respective first and second function results is calculated, to derive an estimate of the signal bit rate (f4) relative to the Rx local reference frequency (f3).

    • A device for determining the concentration of at least one substance in organic tissue includes a subcutaneous needle for insertion into the tissue and a pumping and suction unit which is controlled by a microprocessor and is used for delivering a perfusion fluid and draining it after its partial equilibration with the tissue. The device further includes a sensing unit connected to the microprocessor for determining the concentration of the substance to be analyzed and one or more marker variables. The perfusion fluid, a calibrating solution and at least one drug are provided in replaceable metering ampoules sealed with membranes, whose metering plungers can be actuated by a drive unit controlled by the microprocessor. The metering ampoules communicate with a master capillary leading from the pumping and suction unit to the subcutaneous needle; communication is established via capillary tubes piercing the membranes.
