    • A continuously variable speed transmission with parallel rotary input and output shaft which respectively carry first and second adjustable sheaves for an endless belt or chain. Each sheave has a first flange which is affixed to the respective shaft and a second flange which is movable axially of the respective shaft toward and away from the adjacent first sheave. A first cylinder and piston unit can receive hydraulic fluid from a first pump to urge the second flange of the first sheave against the adjacent portion of the belt or chain, and the same pump supplies fluid to a second cylinder and piston unit which urges the second flange of the second sheave against the adjacent portion of the belt or chain. A second pump serves to supply hydraulic fluid to a third cylinder and piston unit which is located radially inwardly of the first unit and is operable to change the transmission ratio. The second pump also serves to supply fluid to a torque sensor between a prime mover and the input shaft and, in accordance with one presently preferred embodiment, to a fourth cylinder and piston unit which is located radially inwardly of the second unit and is operable to change the transmission ratio. The fourth unit can be replaced with a diaphragm spring which is installed in the cylinder chamber of the second unit.

    • Apparatus for transmission of torque between the crankshaft of the internal combustion engine and the input shaft of the change-speed transmission in a motor vehicle has a flywheel composed of two coaxial sections which are rotatable within limits relative to each other against the opposition of an interposed damper. One of the sections is bolted to the crankshaft and the other section is mounted on two antifriction bearings which surround a tubular support of the transmission housing. A friction clutch is interposed between the second section of the flywheel and the input shaft of the transmission. The mounting of the second section on the housing of the transmission, instead of customary mounting of one section on the other section, prolongs the useful life of the apparatus because the bearings are subjected to less pronounced and more uniformly distributed wear and each of their parts can be fully lubricated in response to engagement of the clutch.

    • A torsion damping assembly which is installed in a motor vehicle between the crankshaft of the internal combustion engine and the input shaft of the change-speed transmission has two coaxial flywheels one of which receives torque from the crankshaft and is rotatable, within limits, relative to the other flywheel which transmits torque to the input shaft of the transmission by way of a friction clutch. The flywheels are rotatable within limits relative to each other against the opposition of a damper and about the axis of a self-aligning or self-adjusting antifriction bearing one race of which is biased axially by a diaphragm spring reacting against the one or the other flywheel. The antifriction bearing surrounds a centrally located protuberance of the one flywheel and extends into a centrally located recess of the other flywheel. Such bearing can stand long periods of use because it holds the flywheels against wobbling and/or other stray movements relative to each other.

    • An internal combustion engine with two crankshafts which are parallel to each other and are installed in a common casing. One of the crankshafts is driven whenever the engine is running and the other crankshaft is driven only when the engine is operated at maximum load. Prior to starting of the cylinders which rotate the other crankshaft, the other crankshaft is gradually accelerated to the speed of the one crankshaft by a friction clutch which is coaxial with the one crankshaft. Once the acceleration of the other crankshaft to the speed of the one crankshaft is completed, and the other crankshaft assumes a predetermined angular position with reference to the one crankshaft, the friction clutch is disengaged and such disengagement entails activation of a positive-engagement clutch between the two crankshafts. The friction clutch can constitute a component part of or it can be integrated into the positive-engagement clutch.

    • A torque transmitting device in a drive train of a motor vehicle to transmit torque between an internal combustion engine having a drive shaft and a transmission having coaxial input shafts. The transmission input shafts are each non-rotatably connected with a respective clutch disc having friction linings. An intermediate pressure plate is positioned between the friction linings of the clutch discs and is non-rotatably connected to the engine drive shaft. The friction linings of the clutch discs are between the intermediate pressure plate and respective axially movable clutch pressure plates that are actuated by an actuation device.
