    • A modular assembly for an electromagnetic machine is disclosed. The modular assembly includes a rotor assembly and a flux controlling assembly. The rotor assembly has a shaft and has a plurality of rotor laminations mounted on the shaft. The rotor laminations define at least four salient rotor poles. At least one permanent magnet is embedded in each of at least two of the salient rotor poles. The flux assembly has a stationary coil disposing about the shaft for controlling flux of the disclosed machine. The flux assembly also has a cage supported on the rotor assembly for transferring flux between the at least two salient rotor poles with embedded magnets and the coil. In one embodiment, a support member is mounted on the shaft and supports the cage thereon. In another embodiment, a support member is connected between the cage and the at least two rotor poles with embedded magnets.

    • An improved switched reluctance motor (1) has a stator assembly (3) and a rotor assembly (5) mounted for rotation relative to the stator assembly. A stator (9) has a plurality of stator teeth (11) defining stator slots (17) therebetween. Stator winding sets (19, 21) include coils inserted in the slots in concatenated pattern in which one part of a coil is inserted in one stator slot and another part of the coil is inserted in the adjacent stator slot. The part of one coil (19a) inserted in a slot is positioned adjacent an inner end of the slot, and a part of a coil (21a) of the second winding set is inserted in the slot toward the outer end of the slot. A wedge (25) is inserted in each slot after the concatenated sets of windings are installed therein. Each wedge is sized to fit in the outer end of a slot and extends the length of the slot. The wedge has a curved outer surface (27) which generally corresponds to the curvature of the end of the teeth adjacent the rotor assembly. An inner surface (33) of each wedge is generally flat and bears against the portion of the coil (21a) located adjacent the outer end of a slot. The wedge compresses the coils sets into the slot. Insertion of wedges in the slots both increases the fill factor of the stator and reduces motor noise caused by movement of the stator windings.

    • A universal motor (18) for a power tool (10) has a stator assembly (22) and an armature (24). The stator assembly includes a plurality of interconnected field windings (28-34) to which current is supplied to run the motor. The armature has a commutator (36) including brushes (40a, 40b) for circulating current through the armature. To quickly and safely brake the motor, without excessively damaging the brushes, a switch (16) is interposed between an AC power source for the motor and the armature. In one embodiment, the switch shorts the armature during braking. In this embodiment, the switch includes sets (56, 58, 60) of electrical contacts by which the inner field windings (28, 30) are connected in series with the outer filed windings (32, 34); and the field windings are series connected with the armature. When the motor is braked, the switch is moved to a position opening the electrical connection between the power source and the outer field winding, while maintaining the electrical connection with the inner field windings. The switch includes electrical contacts across which the armature is connected when the motor is braked. The armature is shorted across these electrical contacts to help brake the motor.

    • A hybrid single-phase variable reluctance motor (31) has a stator (33) having a plurality of inwardly salient teeth (41A-41D) terminating at a central bore (37). The teeth are arranged in generally diametrically opposed pairs of teeth and are generally evenly spaced around the bore. A phase winding (43) is operatively associated with one pair of the stator teeth. The winding, when energized, causes a temporary magnetization of the stator teeth. A rotor (35) is disposed for rotation in the bore and has outwardly salient teeth (45A, 45B) generally diametrically opposed to each other. A permanent magnet (53) is disposed adjacent the bore at the end of one tooth (41D) of a second pair (41C, 41D) of stator teeth. One tooth (41D) of the second pair of stator teeth is offset with respect to a longitudinal axis (A.sub.1) of the second pair of teeth. This offset acts to eliminate a stable detent position in which the rotor could otherwise "park" itself when it stops running. Parking in such a position makes it difficult to restart the motor.

    • A switched reluctance motor has a stator with a plurality of salient motor poles disposed about a central bore. A rotor having an even number of rotor poles is disposed for rotation in the central bore. Magnetizing phase windings are associated with the stator poles for selectively generating magnetic fields which extend from the stator poles into the central bore and define an even number of phases. The windings are disposed such that each stator pole is adjacent two phase windings of opposite polarity with the magnetic flux through each stator varying in direction with the energization of the various phases. The rotor includes a plurality of rotor segments disposed about the periphery of the rotor. Each segment is magnetically active and defines a pair of spaced rotor poles. The spacing between rotor poles for a given rotor segment is substantially the same as that between adjacent stator poles. The rotor further includes non-magnetic material disposed between the rotor segments to magnetically isolate one rotor segment from another so magnetic flux between an adjacent pair of stator poles only passes through the nearest rotor segment. The non-magnetic material provides structural integrity to the rotor and holds the rotor segments fixedly in place.

    • A three-phase stepping motor having magnetically interacting stationary and moving members, the stationary member having first, second, and third sets of stator poles, each stator pole having thereon a coil for magnetic energization thereof. The coils on the first set of stator poles and one-half of the coils on the third set of stator poles are connected to one phase of a two-phase drive. The coils on the second set of stator poles and the other half of the coils on the third set of stator poles are connected to the other phase of a two-phase drive. The fluxes produced by the currents of the two drive phases are, in effect, magnetically combined in the moving member, as if the third set of poles wewre energized by a "third phase". In one embodiment, a twelve-pole, rotary, three-phase stepping motor with a 50-tooth rotor and a 48-, 50-, 52-, or variable-tooth-pitch stator produces a step angle of 1.8.degree. mechanical with a two-phase drive.
