    • A transmission for transferring torque from a prime mover includes a first input shaft adapted to be driven by the prime mover, a second input shaft, an output shaft and an epicyclic gearset. The gearset includes a ring gear being driven by the first input shaft, pinion gears being driven by the ring gear, a sun gear driven by the second input shaft and driving the pinion gears, and a carrier driving the output shaft. A reaction motor drives the second input shaft. A controller controls the reaction motor to vary the speed of the second input shaft and define a gear ratio between the first input shaft and the output shaft based on the second input shaft speed.

    • A pressure relief valve for use in regulating discharge fluid pressure of a pump includes a casted, metal material housing including a passage therein along a longitudinal axis and inlet and outlet ports substantially perpendicular to the longitudinal axis and each having walls that are at an angle less than perpendicular to the longitudinal axis wherein the angle of the wall from being perpendicular to the longitudinal axis is substantially equal to the draft angle from the casting of the housing. A first wall of the outlet intersects with the wall of the passage of the pressure relief valve. A valve body disposed in the passage is movable in the passage against the biasing force of a spring biasing the valve body in a first or closed direction wherein the inlet port and the outlet port are disconnected, until the force at the inlet applied to the valve body overcomes the biasing Force of the spring and the inlet fluid is communicated through the passage and to the outlet. The housing includes a counterbore at the intersection of the wall of the passage and the wall of the outlet port to provide a counterbore surface that is perpendicular to the wall of the passage around the outer circumference of the valve body. The top end of the valve body includes a reduced diameter portion and a tapered portion between the reduced diameter portion and the top of the valve body.

In one embodiment, the control chamber (68) which urges the ump control ring to the minimum displacement position is continually supplied with pressurized working fluid during operation of the ump while the control chamber (72) which urges the pump control ring to the maximum displacement position can selectively be supplied with pressurized working fluid, isolated, or can be relieved of pressurized working fluid to alter the displacement of the pump.

    • A drive axle assembly includes first and second axleshafts connected to a pair of wheels and a drive mechanism operable to selectively couple a driven input shaft to one or both of the axleshafts. The drive mechanism includes a differential assembly, a planetary gear assembly operably disposed between the differential assembly and the first axleshafts and first and second mode clutches. The first mode clutch is operable with the planetary gear assembly to increase the rotary speed of the first axleshaft which, in turn, causes a corresponding decrease in the rotary speed of the second axleshaft. The second mode clutch is operable with the planetary gear assembly to decrease the rotary speed of the first axleshaft so as to cause an increase in the rotary speed of the second axleshaft. A control system controls actuation of both mode clutches.

    • A torque transfer mechanism having a multi-plate friction clutch connecting a pair of rotary members and a electrohydraulic clutch actuator for controlling engagement of the friction clutch. The clutch actuator includes a hydraulic pump, a hydraulically-actuated rotary operator, and a ball ramp mechanism. The hydraulic pump draws low pressure fluid from a sump and delivers high pressure fluid to a series of actuation chambers defined between coaxially aligned first and second components of the rotary operator. The magnitude of the fluid pressure delivered to the actuation chamber controls angular movement of the second component relative to the first component for energizing the ball ramp mechanism. The ball ramp mechanism applies a clutch engagement force on the friction clutch assembly, thereby transferring drive torque from the first rotary member to the second rotary member. A hydraulic control system adaptively regulates the fluid pressure delivered to the actuation chamber.
