    • A safety system associated with an engine of a marine vessel wherein the safety system includes a blower, a control unit, and a plurality of sensors. An intake pressure detection device is coupled to the intake manifold of the engine for the detection of pressure at the intake manifold. A sensor is coupled to the engine to monitor oil pressure and, along with the intake pressure detection device, transmits a signal to the control unit, with the signals each having a characteristic corresponding to the respective engine pressure. Detection of an engine pressure associated with engine idling or low cruise operation causes the control unit to activate the blower. The safety system includes interactive heat sensors and vapor sensors to monitor the atmosphere in an engine compartment. Detection of a volatile environment activates the blower and triggers both an audio and a visual warning.

    • A system and method for preventing unauthorized starting of a motor vehicle. A timing interval of preselected duration is generated only upon detecting positioning of an ignition switch to a first position by means of a proper key inserted into the vehicle ignition switch. An electrical indication is generated when the ignition switch is positioned to a second position which, in one embodiment, corresponds to a start position of an automobile ignition switch. A starting circuit interrupt element remains in or is urged into a normally closed state to electrically complete the starting circuit only when the electrical indication appears during the time interval. The starting circuit may thereby only be energized for starting the motor during a normal preselected starting sequence comprised of key insertion followed by positioning of the switch from the first to the second state within the preselected time interval.

    • The invention provides a system applicable to various internal combustion engines, such as for automobiles, motorcycles, snowmobiles and outboards, to permit an authorized person, such as a police officer, to prevent their improper or illegal operation. The engine includes a detector detecting the speed of operation of the motor which is compared with a preset value. Upon an unusually high motor speed being reached a receiver is enabled for a preset period of time. During this preset period the engine can be disabled by a transmission from a transmitter operated by the police officer, preferably using a designated exclusive channel. The disabling slows the engine to an idle speed without stopping it, so that the power assist mechanisms of the vehicle remain operative to maintain normal braking and steering function.

    • In a capacitor-discharge breakerless ignition system for an internal combustion engine, a safety interlock comprising a rectifier and a switch responsive to a preselected unsafe vehicle condition is connected in the charge circuit of the ignition capacitor. The rectifier is poled in the forward capacitor charge-voltage direction and is connected with respect to the switch such that the capacitor is not charged or, once charged, is discharged prior to engine ignition in response to an unsafe condition indicated by the switch, or in response to intentional or accidental breakage and/or short-circuiting of interlock/ignition interconnection leads. The rectifier and the switch are packaged in such a manner, preferably separate from the rest of the ignition, to deter tampering with the switch alone, and to permit locating the switch and rectifier remote from the ignition circuit. In one preferred application the rectifier-switch package is mounted on the handle of a rotary lawn mower to serve as a deadman switch.
