    • A joystick controller 10 for remotely controlling hydraulic directional control valve 82 and also for controlling a solenoid actuated pressure build-up valve 90 is disclosed. A light-emitting diode 19 is carried in and by a handle 13 of the joystick controller 10. A photosensitive transistor 31 receives the light emitted from the light-emitting diode 19. When the handle 13 moves off of a neutral position, a receptacle 28 blocks the light from the photo-transistor 31. In one embodiment, a fiber optic light conductor 20 extends from the light-emitting diode 19 toward the photo-transistor 31. The photo-transistor 31 then actuates a relay switch which sends a control signal to a solenoid actuated pressure build-up valve 90, thereby providing a ready means for effectuating both the control of the hydraulic directional control valve 82 and the pressure build-up valve solenoid 90 with one controller 10.

    • An arrangement for retrieving information from a directory responsive to a sequence of spoken character signals in which a set of probable characters for each character signal is stored in a position ordered array. A candidate word is formed from the most probable characters of the array and the directory is repeatedly searched for words therein which match a candidate word. After each unsuccessful search, the candidate word is modified by selectively substituting array characters for mismatched position characters on the basis of the closest mismatched word found in the preceding search. If there are no more array characters for substitution after an unsuccessful search, a new candidate word is formed by placing an ignore character in the first mismatched position of the best candidate word of all preceding searches. The position of the ignore mismatch character is shifted left each time no further array characters are available for substitution. Responsive to detection of a matching word, a spoken message is generated from the information associated therewith.

    • A demand for a change in the operating condition of at least one of a plurality of vehicle mounted devices is issued by means of a single push button switch attached to the center of the steering wheel. When the vehicle occupant intends to manipulate a device such as a radio, stereo unit or an air conditioner, he depresses the switch to supply a microcomputer with a demand signal. The microcomputer produces an instruction signal with which a sound synthesizer produces sequential vocal announcements which are emitted via a speaker. The occupant depresses the switch again within a predetermined period of time after the emission of a vocal announcement naming a device intended to control so that the sound synthesizer now provides various manipulative information relating to the available manipulations of the selected device. The driver depresses the switch to issue responsive instructions in response to an announcement of desired manipulation. The microcomputer thus operates to produce necessary control signals which are fed to a corresponding control unit of the selected device. A sound recognizer may be used in place of or together with the switch to detect the demand and responsive instructions from the driver.
