    • An electric connecting clamp for an ignition unit of a model engine has a cell casing which is threadably coupled with a fixed clamping member at the front end thereof. The fixed clamping has a forwardly extending first clamping portion of arc-shaped cross-section. A movable clamping member is pivotally attached to the fixed clamping member. The movable clamping member has a second clamping portion of arc-shaped cross-section which has a front end to define a mouth with the front end of the first clamping portion. An inclining portion extends rearward and radially outward from the second clamping portion and is pivoted to the fixed clamping member. A conductor extends from the cell casing to a contact member provided adjacent the mouth. The contact member is biased to the mouth and the second clamping portion is biased to the first clamping portion.

    • A small internal combustion engine especially--but not exclusively--for model aircraft is made at an extremely low cost. A crankcase and a fuel tank are made of two casted pieceparts which nest together. The two pieceparts include matching openings which are aligned to provide an air intake and a manifold leading from the fuel tank into the interior of the crankcase. A crankshaft is journaled to rotate within the crankcase. A connecting rod is made from a generally "Y" shaped leaf spring. The stem of the "Y" is mounted on a throw on the crankshaft for producing a reciprocal motion within a cylinder. The tops of the "Y" shaped connecting rod are shaped to form diametrically opposed dimples. A cup-shaped piston has diametrically opposed, internal abuttments formed by a hole drilled through the piston skirt. The dimples on the connecting rod snap into the opposing holes inside the piston.

    • A system for remote control starting of model engines of the internal combustion type, used on model airplanes, automobiles, boats and the like, while stationary, in motion, or in flight. A starting gear or pulley is mounted by a combination roller bearing and one-way clutch directly on a section of the crank shaft of the engine. An electric starting motor drives the gear or pulley for cranking the engine. The motor is energized by power from a battery pack carried on the vehicle via a circuit having a pair of diodes therein, the voltage drop across which serves to energize the glow plug or igniter. A start switch in the motor circuit is activated by a servo device in turn activated by signals received from a radio receiver on the vehicle. The servo device also activates a choke plug for the carburetor air intake, to aid in initial starting of the engine, and a cut-off valve in the fuel line to assist in starting the engine after stalling, while stationary, on the ground or while in motion, as when an airplane is in flight.

    • An internal combustion engine having characteristics that lie between the Otto cycle and the Diesel cycle, plus the ability to burn any type of liquid hydrocarbon fuel. Air is compressed to the peak of the compression stage, at which point the high-pressure, high-temperature fuel vapor is injected into the combustion chamber where it mixes with the air and ignites to initiate the power stroke. Liquid hydrocarbon fuel is vaporized in a flash boiler and brought up to high pressure, well in excess of the compression pressure in the combustion chamber, and to temperature above the ignition point. At the peak of compression, a regulable valve opens to allow a metered quantity of the high-pressure vaporized fuel to be injected into the combustion chamber. The vaporized fuel, being already heated well above the ignition temperature, ignites as it mixes with the air in the combustion chamber and burns cleanly and efficiently during the power stroke. Heat of vaporization added to the fuel in the boiler is added to the heat generated by combustion, thereby producing an additional increment of power in the power stroke. During the warm-up stage, the engine operates as a conventional gasoline engine, using a carburetor and spark ignition. When the fuel boiler reaches operating temperature and pressure, the carburetor is switched off, and operation is continued, using high pressure fuel vapor injection.

    • A pumpless four cycle internal combustion engine for lighterthan-air gaseous fuels such as natural gas. The gas at a controlled low pressure is admitted to a gas chamber adjoining the engine combustion chamber by a check valve during the intake stroke while unthrottled air enters the combustion chamber and is given a swirling motion by suitable means at the air intake valve. During the compression stroke, the swirling air draws the gaseous fuel from the gas chamber and, due to the lower specific weight of the fuel, swirls the fuel spirally toward a centrally located glow plug. At the end of the compression stroke, the fuel charge is stratified around the glow plug in a concentric pattern whereupon ignition occurs.
