    • A belt retractor comprises a belt reel rotatably mounted in a frame, a locking mechanism for selective blocking of belt reel rotation and an activating mechanism for the locking mechanism with a control disk restrictedly rotatable with respect to the belt reel. The locking mechanism is activated by rotation of the control disk relative to the belt reel. A planetary gear is provided which includes a sun wheel connected to the belt reel for joint rotation, an annular gear secured to the frame and at least one planet wheel having an external toothing mating with the sun wheel and the annular gear. The planet wheel has at least one switching cam. A switching toggle is mounted to swivel between a normal position and a locking position. The switching toggle is moveable into the locking position by the switching cam of the planet wheel to inhibit the activating mechanism.

    • A control mechanism for a mechanical sensor at a safety belt reeling device of a safety restraining mechanism has a housing and a mechanical sensor pivotably connected to the housing. A locking device is connected to the housing and has a locking position for securing the mechanical sensor against pivoting and a release position for releasing the mechanical sensor. The locking device has an initial disengaged position before mounting of the housing to the vehicle and a stand-by position in which the locking device still secures the mechanical sensor. A sensing device for sensing belt removal from the safety belt reeling device is provided and cooperates with the locking device in the stand-by position such that, at a certain degree of belt removal, the sensing device moves the locking device from the locking position into the release position. A control member for controlling the locking device is provided and has an inactive position and an active position. The control member is moved from the inactive position into the active position when the housing is fastened to the vehicle. In the inactive position the locking device is forced by the control member into the initial disengaged position and, when the control member is moved into the active position, the locking device is moved into the stand-by position.

    • A seat belt apparatus is provided for restraining the occupant of a seat assembly within a vehicle body structure having a plurality of closure members each hingedly supported for movement between opened and closed positions to selectively open and close a respective utility opening. The closure members may be front and rear side doors, a hood or a trunk lid. The seat belt apparatus includes a length of flexible belt having fixed and free ends opposite to each other, an automatic belt retractor rigidly connected with the free end of the belt for forcibly winding up the belt thereby holding the belt under tension, a detecting system for detecting the movement of at least one of the closure members towards the opened position, a locking mechanism built in the automatic belt retractor for preventing the belt from being pulled outwards from the automatic belt retractor when a predetermined acceleration acts thereon, and a cancelling mechanism for disabling the locking mechanism when the detecting system detects the movement of the at least one of the closure members towards the opened position. Instead of the cancelling mechanism, a sensitivity reducing mechanism may be provided for lowering the sensitivity of the locking mechanism.

    • There is provided an improvement in a seat belt retractor mechanism of the type having a seat belt reel rotatably mounted in a support frame adapted to be assembled on a movable door of a vehicle, wherein the reel has at least on one end a generally circular ratchet plate for engaging a locking element movably mounted on the support frame between a first position allowing the reel to payout the belt freely and a second position engaging the ratchet plate to hold the reel against rotation to payout the seat belt. An inertia sensing element carried by the support frame shifts this locking element into the locked position upon being moved by inertia forces caused by rapid acceleration or deceleration of the vehicle to which the mechanism is mounted. In addition, an electromagnet is employed for increasing the amount of inertia force needed to move the inertia sensor element during such rapid changes in speed of the vehicle. This electromagnet is energized when the door is opened so that movement of the door itself by the occupant in entering or leaving the vehicle will not trip the sensor element. The improvement is the provision of a generally flat pole surface for the electromagnet and a generally flat keeper surface which are engaged in a generally coplanar relationship to cause the increased inertia force by magnetic attraction between the engaged surfaces upon energizing the electromagnet when the door is open. When the door is closed, there is no magnetic force between the engaging surfaces so that the inertia sensor element is moved by normal inertia forces.

    • A seat belt retractor adapted for mounting on a vehicle door includes an inertia sensing pendulum for moving the lock bar into engagement with a belt reel to lock the reel against belt unwinding rotation. A feeler device, such as a plunger, is mounted on the door for sensing initial movement of the door away from the closed position. A flexible element, such as a chain, is connected to the pendulum and the feeler device. The flexible element has a normal slackened link when the door is closed so that the pendulum is free for movement to move the lock bar to the reel engaging position. Upon initial door opening movement, the plunger extends and tensions the flexible element so that the flexible element restrains the pendulum against movement from the normal position by an inertia stimulus induced by door opening movement.

    • A seat belt inhibitor system is designed to prevent door mounted inertial seat belt retractor 14 from locking the seat belt webbing 13 whenever the door is opened. The retractor pendulum 31, sensitive to acceleration, moves the locking bar 28 upward locking the retractor and prevents the belt webbing from paying out. An electromagnet 36, when energized, attracts a leaf spring 37 extending from the locking bar inhibiting movement of the latter. System inhibiting is initiated by closing either a door latch switch 42 or a door release handle switch 41. At low accelerations (occurring while the door is being opened), the locking bar 28 is restrained by the electromagnet 36 through the leaf spring 37. If the system should fail such that the electromagnet was energized while the door is closed, high acceleration of the pendulum would force the locking bar up, locking the retractor. Deenergizing occurs normally whenever the door is closed.
