    • A method of positioning a shaft and associated seal in turbomachinery utilizing electromagnetic bearings. The method includes applying electrical power to the electromagnetic bearings' windings, the shaft center being in a first position and the shaft being in contact with the associated seal. Power adjustment to the electromagnetic bearings moves the shaft. Shaft movements can manipulate the seal, the movements being of decreasing amplitude to a position in which the seal is out of contact with the shaft when the shaft is rotated at its centered position during normal operation. The shaft is in its centered position during normal operation when the shaft axis is substantially coaxial with an axis of the electromagnetic bearings. Movements of decreasing amplitude may include oscillations of decreasing amplitude about one or more axes, or may include a spiral rotation with a decreasing radius to move the shaft center from initial to final positions.

    • A vehicle wheel bearing apparatus for a driven wheel has an outer member integrally formed with a body mounting flange on its outer circumference. The body mounting flange is adapted to be mounted on a knuckle forming part of a suspension apparatus of the vehicle. The outer member inner circumference includes double row outer raceway surfaces. An inner member includes a wheel hub and at least one inner ring. The wheel hub has a wheel mounting flange formed at one end portion. A cylindrical portion axially extends from the wheel mounting flange. The inner ring is press fit onto the cylindrical portion of the wheel hub. The inner member has a plurality of inner raceway surfaces adapted to be arranged opposite to the plurality of outer raceway surfaces. Double row rolling elements are freely rollably contained, via cages, between the outer raceway surfaces and inner raceway surfaces, respectively, of the outer member and the inner member. Seals are arranged in annular spaces formed between the outer member and the inner member. The knuckle is integrally formed with a disc-shaped bottom. The outer member is adapted to be connected to the knuckle, via bolts, with the body mounting flange abutted against the knuckle. The inner side end of the inner member is covered by the knuckle.

    • A lubricant retention assembly is employed with an electric motor to prevent the loss of lubricant from a self contained lubricant reservoir of the motor. The lubricant retention assembly includes a thrust collar mounted on the motor shaft and a bearing cap surrounding the thrust collar, where the thrust collar has an annular flange that throws lubricant leaking along the shaft radially outwardly toward the bearing cap. The bearing cap has an angled interior surface that deflects the lubricant thrown from the annular flange of the thrust collar back into the motor interior and toward the lubricant reservoir. A thrust washer is also provided on the shaft adjacent the thrust collar and prevents lubricant leakage along the shaft between the interface of the shaft and the thrust collar. The thrust washer and thrust collar have complementary configurations that maintain the thrust washer in position on the shaft adjacent the thrust collar.
