    • A fuel injector includes a spool control valve, a plunger which moves in a fuel pressure chamber between retracted and full stroke positions. The fuel injector may include a spill port for spilling fuel from the fuel pressure chamber, the spill port being open at the start and closed by the translating motion of the plunger to delay the start of injection. The fuel injector chamber may further include a control port which is closed at the start of plunger motion and is opened by the plunger to connect the pressure chamber to a needle back chamber to bias the needle valve closed. The needle back chamber becomes isolated from the pressure chamber by further movement of the plunger and includes a pressure control passage to allow the pressure therein to decay upon control port closure, thereby effecting split injection or rate shaping.

    • A hydraulically-actuated fuel injector comprises an injector body that defines a nozzle chamber that opens to a nozzle outlet and a plunger bore, and a spill port that opens into the plunger bore. A hydraulic means within the injector body pressurizes fuel in the nozzle chamber, and includes a plunger with an end face, a side surface and a centerline. The plunger is positioned in the plunger bore and moveable a stroke distance between a retracted position and an advanced position. A needle valve member is positioned in the nozzle chamber and moveable between an open position in which the nozzle outlet is open and a closed position in which the nozzle outlet is blocked. The plunger includes a groove in its side surface that is arranged in a helical pattern about the centerline and further includes a spill passage extending between the end face and the groove. A pin and guide slot assembly, within the injector body, are provided for rotating the plunger about the centerline when the plunger is moving a portion of the stroke distance between its advanced position and its retracted position. Finally, the injector includes a control valve for stopping the plunger at a metered position between its retracted position and its advanced position when the plunger is retracting from its advanced position.

    • In a fuel injection device for fuel-injected internal combustion engines, in which a pump piston and a pump piston bushing or a control sleeve can be turned relative to each other and the end of output is determined by at least one slanted control edge, which slides over an overflow hole of the respective other part; whereby to achieve a pre-injection and a main injection a take-up piston that is driven in a cylinder that is connected to the high pressure chamber is provided and whereby the volume released from the take-up piston determines the injection pause between pre-injection and main injection, the slanted control edge, in the area of zero output, exhibits a step that runs back in the direction of a rotation corresponding to the direction of an increase in output. The distance of the point, at which the slanted control edge changes into the recess that runs back, to the control edge that controls the start of output, is greater than the diameter of the overflow hole. Because of this step, the area of zero output is increased and displaced in the direction of increased output. In this way, the required control angle is reduced without increasing the steepness of the slanted control edge.
