    • In using various vessels such as reaction vessels there must be provisions for adding materials to the vessels and for observing the vessel contents. The structure of this invention provides a vessel closure device that provides both of these conveniences. This closure device has an annular seal ring containing spring plungers each located outside areas of exposure to the contamination of the vessel. The seal ring also has two O-ring seals to ensure against leakage. There is also provided a sliding door with a viewing window that is aligned with all openings in the other closure device components in order to provide a clear viewing and addition path to the interior of the vessel.

    • A gage glass assembly can be mounted in a standard pipe joint flange and has a sleeve with an inturned flange at the outer end and an outwardly extending flange at the inner end. A pair of cylindrical lenses inside the sleeve are interspaced by a plastic sheet that also extends axially between the inner lens and the sleeve and outwardly over the outwardly extending flange. Both lenses and the sheet are bonded together and to the sleeve by a transparent, plastic material. A liquid level gage has a cover extending over a body having an elongated central chamber and the cover has a similarly elongated recess facing the chamber. A pair of glass lenses are stacked in the recess and a transparent plastic sheet extends between the lenses, along the side of the inner lens and outwardly over the inner side of the cover, where it serves as a gasket between the cover and the body. A plastic bonding material fills the space between the plastic sheet, the two lenses, and the cover recess.

    • Disclosed is a sightglass assembly of particular application for use with a laser flowmeter to measure flow velocities of high pressure fluid flowing through a tube. A short, thick-walled glass tube having spherically rounded ends is coaxially interposed in a fluid flow system such that a continuous cylindrical fluid flow passage is provided through the bore of the sightglass tube. The sightglass tube is longitudinally clamped between a pair of endpieces having fluid flow bores. Spherical receiving surfaces in the endpieces are mated with the spherical ends of the sightglass tube to seal the joints between the sightglass and the endpieces and to pre-stress the sightglass tube with radially inward stress components enabling it to withstand higher internal fluid pressures. A pair of flat viewports on opposite sides of the sightglass tube provide windows for passage of laser light through the fluid medium in a direction transverse to the direction of flow.

    • A sight glass apparatus for viewing the interior of a pressurised vessel, chamber or a pipe conveying fluid under pressure is described. The sight glass apparatus comprises a sight glass assembly mounted over an opening into the vessel, chamber or pipe, the sight glass assembly comprising a sight glass adjacent the opening which provides a window to the inside of the vessel, chamber or pipe, and a containment vessel mounted behind and/or around the sight glass assembly for containing fluid exiting the opening in the pipe in the event that the sight glass assembly fails. In this way, even if the sight glass assembly fails, the pressurised fluid within the pressurised vessel, chamber or pipe is safely contained. In addition, a secondary sight glass can be provided behind the first, with a liquid or gel, or minimal gap, between the primary and secondary glasses to reduce the likelihood of a failure in the first sight glass triggering failure of the second sight glass, and/or a valve can be provided to automatically isolate the pressure system upon a sight glass failure.
