摘要： A combustion chamber of an internal combustion engine is disclosed. The combustion chamber comprises an approximately triangular upper wall in at least one vertical section passing through the center of the combustion chamber, a squish area formed by a peripheral portion of upper wall of piston and the upper wall of the combustion chamber, and a step which is formed on at least one of the peripheral portions of the piston and the upper wall of the combustion chamber. The radial and outward flows impinge on the step inside of the squish area. A height of the step in at least the vicinity of the vertical section is approximately equal to the smallest clearance of the squish area.

The fuel guide passage passes through the vicinity of said inserting position. Each wall constructing the fuel guide passage and each extended phantom surface of each wall are arranged not to cross the ignition portion provided at the tip of the ignition plug in spite of the piston position.

摘要： An internal combustion engine includes fuel injectors which directly inject high pressure fuel into combustion chambers of the engine. Spark plugs are provided in the combustion chambers, a catalytic converter is provided in the middle of the exhaust pipe for purifying the exhaust, and a temperature sensor is provided for detecting the temperature of a catalyst of the catalytic converter. A control unit which receives as input the engine rotational speed, load, and the detection value of the catalyst temperature sensor controls the engine such that, when the temperature of the catalyst is lower than a predetermined target temperature, the fuel injectors inject additional fuel into the combustion chambers during at least one of the expansion stroke and the exhaust stroke to mix the fuel with the exhaust. Thereafter, the exhaust having the additional fuel mixed in is reignited upstream of the catalytic converter to heat the catalyst to the target temperature.

At a timing when the supplied fuel attaches to the NOx storage reduction catalysts (23a, 23b), one of exhaust control valves, for example, a first exhaust control valve (26a) is temporarily closed so as to keep the air-fuel ratio of exhaust gas rich. When NOx is released from the NOx storage reduction catalysts (23a, 23b) next time, a second exhaust control valve (26b) is temporarily closed after the fuel is supplied.

摘要： An object of the invention is to provide a technique for improving the efficiency of performance regeneration process that is executed on NOx storage reduction catalysts provided in a plurality of branch passages branching from the exhaust passage and reduce emissions of NOx from an internal combustion engine to the atmosphere. When the quantity of NOx discharged from an internal combustion engine and flowing into an exhaust pipe is smaller than a predetermined quantity, fuel serving as reducing agent is added through a fuel addition valve while torque change moderating process is executed (from T0 to T1). After that, a first flow rate control valve is closed to make the flow rate of the exhaust gas flowing in the first branch passage smaller than that in the second branch passage (from T1 to T3).

When regenerating the purification performance of a first exhaust purification device provided in a first branch passage, a second valve provided in a second branch passage is set at a predetermined first intermediate opening and a first valve provided in the first branch passage is fully closed.
