    • A fault detecting apparatus for an exhaust gas recirculation control system of an internal combustion engine includes a throttle valve provided in an intake pipe of the engine, an exhaust gas recirculation pipe for introducing an exhaust gas of the engine to the intake pipe downstream of the throttle valve, an exhaust gas recirculation valve for regulating a recirculation flow rate of the exhaust gas, sensors for detecting operation state inclusive of an intake pressure, an exhaust gas recirculation valve control unit for controlling the exhaust gas recirculation valve in accordance with operation state information, a fault decision enabling condition detecting means for detecting satisfaction of the condition enabling the decision about occurrence of fault in the recirculation valve control unit on the basis of the operation state information, a unit for forcibly opening and/or closing the exhaust gas recirculation valve when the fault decision enabling condition is satisfied, a fault decision means for comparing a value derived from the intake pressures detected upon enforcive opening/closing of the exhaust gas recirculation control valve with a fault decision reference value to decide whether any fault occurs in the recirculation valve control unit, and a compensation means for compensating for influence of a parameter which affects the intake pressures detected upon enforcive opening/closing of the recirculation valve. The range within which the fault decision is enabled can be widened and/or reliability of the fault decision can be improved.

    • An exhaust gas recirculation control device adapted to control a recirculation of part of exhaust gas of an internal combustion engine back to the engine which comprises a recirculation pipe for recirculating the exhaust gas of the internal combustion engine back to an intake air pipe; a recirculation valve for controlling a flow quantity of the exhaust gas flowing in the recirculation pipe; a recirculation valve passage area controlling means for controlling a passage area of the recirculation valve; a running condition detecting means for detecting a running condition of the internal combustion engine; a pressure difference detecting means for detecting a pressure difference between pressures at two arbitrary points in the recirculation pipe from an exit of the recirculation valve to the intake air pipe or a pressure difference between pressures at two arbitrary points in the recirculation pipe from an inlet of the recirculation valve to an exhaust pipe; a first exhaust gas recirculation ratio calculating means for calculating a first exhaust gas recirculation ratio from the pressure difference and a detected value of the running condition detecting means; and a second exhaust gas recirculation ratio calculating means for calculating a second exhaust gas recirculation ratio corresponding with the detected value of the running condition detecting means; wherein a feed back control is performed in which the passage area of the recirculation valve is increased or decreased so that a difference between the first exhaust gas recirculation ratio and a second exhaust gas recirculation ratio is nullified.

    • Exhaust gas cleaner system for an automotive internal combustion engine includes an air introduction pipe 8 for introducing secondary air, heated initially by a heater 23, to the catalytic converter unit 7 mounted on the exhaust pipe 3.
