    • A safety seatbelt retractor for use in a vehicle including a frame adapted to be fixed to the vehicle and a winding shaft rotatably mounted on the frame. The seatbelt is normally wound around the winding shaft. The winding shaft has associated therewith a spring member. When the seatbelt is unwound out of the winding shaft, the spring member applies no or weak biasing force to the winding shaft in such direction as to cause the seatbelt to be wound therearound. During the normal fastening of the seatbelt on a passenger taking his seat of the vehicle, the spring member continuously applies a weak biasing force to the winding shaft in the direction mentioned above. The winding shaft has also associated therewith a drive unit which, when operated, drives the winding shaft to rotate the same so as to cause the seatbelt to be wound around the winding shaft. The drive unit is operated when the seatbelt is unfastened or the passenger gets off the vehicle with the seatbelt unwound out of the winding shaft.

    • A variable reluctance angle sensor includes a stator, a rotor, and a computation section. The stator includes a core member having teeth, which are arranged in a circumferential direction, and excitation coils, which are respectively wound about the teeth such that magnetic poles of the teeth have different polarities alternately in the circumferential direction. An input voltage is supplied to the excitation coils. The rotor radially faces the teeth of the stator. The rotor has a shape such that gap permeance with respect to the stator changes in a sinusoidal fashion in accordance with the rotational angle of the rotor. The computation section obtains output voltages of two or more phases having different phases based on the voltages of the excitation coils, and detects the rotational angle of the rotor based on the output voltages.

    • A retractable safety belt system for restraining a vehicle occupant in a seat comprising a seat belt secured at one end to a reel of an electric-motor driven retractor. The retractor motor is controlled by control means (9) having a drive circuit (92G) and a reverse rotation or protraction rotation detection circuit (94A) which senses the reverse rotation of the motor as the seat belt is protracted and energizes the motor to retract the seat belt, thereby removing any slack in the seat belt. Preferably, the control means includes an increasing voltage circuit (94C) for gradually increasing the voltage applied to the motor, thereby reducing the motor torque at the initial stage of retraction. Also, the control means preferably includes a load sensing circuit (94B) which de-energizes the motor as the load on the motor and, hence, the tension in the seat belt reaches a predetermined level.

    • A seat belt tensioning device for a vehicle comprises a cylinder, a piston which is slidably inserted within the cylinder and a piston operating means.The piston is composed of a first and a second cylindrical piston members which are adjacent to each other.The seat belt tensioning device further comprises a rod which is connected to a seat belt and is contacted with the second piston member by passing a deformable member, which is plastically deformed by a predetermined tension force through the first piston member. The deformable member is disposed adjacent to the second piston member and connected to the rod by passing through the first and second members.The rod and the second piston member form a conical continuously inclined surface of which diameter is enlarged in the piston moving direction near the contact portion thereof. Stopper pieces having a sharp end portion are radially supported by the conical continuously inclined surface.When the tension force of the seat belt exceeds the plastically deforming load of the deformable member at an urgent time, such as upon a vehicle impact, the deformable member is plastically deformed by the second piston member and elongated and the stopper pieces are lifted up by the taper portion of the second piston member to cut into the cylinder.As a result, the piston is locked in the cylinder and the kinetic energy of the passenger can be absorbed.Therefore, the passenger is prevented from the secondary impact and the injury due to the tensioned seat belt.
