    • Dawsonite is formed by reacting alumina trihydrate with sodium bicarbonate in a sodium carbonate solution under pressure at a temperature between 100.degree. and 200.degree. C. for 30 minutes to 4 hours. The alumina trihydrate concentration is no greater than 86 grams per liter. The sodium carbonate concentration is between 150 and 300 grams per liter. Sufficient sodium bicarbonate is added to react with all the alumina trihydrate according to the equation:2Al(OH).sub.3 +2NaHCO.sub.3 =Na.sub.2 O:Al.sub.2 O.sub.3 :2CO.sub. 2 :2H.sub.2 O+2H.sub.2 OThe resulting dawsonite is of high purity.

    • A method for producing precipitated silica products having a unique combination of physical and chemical properties is disclosed. The products are produced by acidulating a solution of an alkali metal silicate with an acid under carefully controlled precipitation conditions. In accordance with the method, at least a portion of the alkali metal silicate solution theoretically required to react with said acid is initially charged to the reaction vessel. Thereafter, the remaining silicate solution and the acid are simultaneously added to the reaction vessel in a manner to control the alkalinity of the reaction medium. By controlling the percent of the silicate solution initially charged to the reaction vessel, silicas having predetermined properties can be obtained. Properties of the products include low wet cake moisture content, low structure, low oil absorption, high abrasiveness, and low void volume. The products can be used as abrasive and polishing agents in dentifrice compositions. In one particular advantageous embodiment, an adduct material, such as aluminum, is added to control the refractive index of the product.

    • An improved record member is disclosed of the type having a sensitized surface including an oil soluble acid-reactant organic polymer and a colorless acid type mineral such as kaolin clay. Sensitized surfaces of the foregoing type develop distinctive colors when contacted with a normally colorless oil solution containing two chromogenic materials which react, respectively in different time sequence, with the polymer and acid mineral. In the improved member kaolin particles are encapsulated within the said polymer material, whereby said sensitized surface possesses better and more uniform marking qualities. A method for preparation of the coating composition utilized in the member is also set forth.

    • A process for making densified kaolin clay pellets of high bulk density, good handling and bulk flow properties, and low moisture content is disclosed. The process consists essentially of mixing substantially dry kaolin clay with water to bring the total moisture content of the finely divided kaolin clay to from about 17% to about 26% by weight based on the weight of said dry kaolin clay during mixing in a first pin mixer, followed by micropulverization, and subsequent pelletization by pin mixing. The pellets are dried to 1% or less moisture content by weight based on the weight of dry kaolin clay.

    • Apparatus for agglomerating powders and non-flowing fine particle minerals such as clay, silicas, and silicates involving means for establishing a minimum level of wetting agent content in the material to be agglomerated, a rotatably mounted motor driven drum for tumbling the material to be agglomerated over itself, spray nozzles located within the drum to add additional wetting liquid to the material within the drum, and conveying means for passing the material into the drum and discharge means for removing the agglomerated powder, which is now formed into pellets of an advantageous pellet size distribution, therefrom. The spray nozzles are situated to spray the wetting agent onto the material at the curl thereof. The establishing of a minimum level of wetting agent content in the powder, preferably in the range of 1-1/2% to 5%, is achieved either by incomplete drying of the material during wet processing or by the application of a wetting agent prior to introduction into the drum.
