    • A transmission ratio selector mechanism for a transmission having two ratio selector couplers both of which must be engaged to provide drive through the transmission. The selector mechanism includes a selector shaft which is rotatable about its longitudinal axis and also axially moveable parallel to its longitudinal axis. Rotation of the selector shaft is arranged to operate one of the couplers via a mechanical linkage including a twin-armed member and a pivoted lever while axial movement of the shaft operates the other coupler via a fluid pressure-operated actuator and an associated control valve mechanism. An interlock is provided to ensure that the fluid pressure-operated coupler is always engaged before the mechanically operated coupler. The interlock comprises a formation which is movable with the shaft and cooperates with a formation movable with the coupler which is to be engaged first.

    • An actuator for frictional engaging devices is controlled by electric signals from a control device and is disposed in a power transmission device. The actuator includes a torque generating mechanism and has at least two movably mounted frictional engaging devices having respective initial positions. The actuator includes a torque-thrust conversion mechanism which converts torque generated from the torque generating mechanism into an augmented thrust force for moving the frictional engaging devices from the respective initial positions to different positions respectively. The torque-thrust conversion mechanism has a given initial position and connecting means which transmit the augmented thrust force generated from the torque-thrust conversion mechanism to each respective one of the frictional engaging devices, whereby the torque-thrust conversion mechanism can move the frictional engaging devices from the respective initial positions to different positions respectively by rotation in one rotational direction from the given initial position.

    • In an automatic transmission, an arrangement for discharging band servo operating hydraulic pressure comprises an upstanding passage and a communication passage formed in a transmission case, and a discharge valve installed in the communication passage. The upstanding passage is so formed as to extend inwardly or upwardly from a control valve body joining surface of the transmission case. The communication passage is so formed as to extend inwardly from an outer peripheral portion of the transmission case adjacent an oil pump cover joining surface thereof to fluidly connect a servo cylinder chamber to the upstanding passage which is in turn fluidly connected to a servo release passage of a control valve assembly. The discharge valve is in the form of a check valve and disposed in the open end of the communication passage which is located at the above described peripheral portion of the transmission case adjacent the oil pump cover joining surface thereof.

    • A low power electric motor slowly leads a spring, which rapidly operates a two speed axle shift. An electric motor drives a nonreversing worm gear which engages a gear rack on a shaft. The shaft supports a caged spring. The motor moves the shaft, compressing the spring against one end of the cage, storing energy required for shifting. A solenoid piston holds the cage in position. When the shift is desired, the solenoid is tripped, the piston is raised and the spring moves the cage. An arm on the cage moves the shift lever. The solenoid piston engages the opposite detent in the cage and holds the cage in the new position. As the cage arrives at the new position, a lug trips a microswitch which completes a circuit to operate the motor in the reverse direction. The motor worm slowly drives the gear which slowly drives the rack to move the shaft in the reverse direction, compressing the spring against the opposite end of the cage. When the shaft moves sufficiently to fully load the spring, a lug on the shaft trips the switch turning the motor off. The next pulsing of the solenoid causes the spring to drive the cage in the opposite direction, back towards its first position, where the solenoid locks the cage. A lug in the cage trips the switch, turning the motor on to run in a forward direction, driving the shaft to its original position and compressing the spring until a lug on the shaft engages a switch, turning the motor off.
