    • A compound roll for rolling composed of a shell made of adamite having a carbon content of 1.4-2.5 weight % and a core made of forged or cast steel, the shell being metallurgically bonded to the core by casting an adamite melt around the already prepared core, and the shell having a large residual compressive stress. The adamite shell has a composition consisting essentially, by weight, of 1.4-2.5% of C, 0.6-0.8% of Si, 0.8-1.0% of Mn, 0.5-2.5% of Ni, 1.0-4.0% of Cr, 0.2-2.0% of Mo and the balance being essentially Fe. The residual compressive stress of the shell is desirably at least 20 kg/mm.sup.2 so that cracks are effectively prevented from penetrating into the depths of the shell, thereby preventing the breakage of the compound roll at a roll body thereof.

    • The present invention relates to the production of metal parts whose core and surface must have different characteristics. Its subject comprises firstly a process for the production of a composite metal part by coating or hard-surfacing a metal core of low-alloy structural steel with a harder metal layer composed of a high-speed chromium-tungsten or chromium-molybdenum steel or a high-speed steel containing chromium associated at the same time with a plurality of elements such as tungsten, molybdenum, vanadium, and cobalt, this process being at the same time characterized in that this high-speed steel has a hardness higher than 57 Rockwell C, in that the low-alloy steel which constitutes the metal core is selected to be compatible with the said high-speed steel, in that the said high-speed steel is applied exclusively in the form of a prealloyed powder, and in that the coating or hard-surfacing of the core with this powder is effected with the aid of one of the welding processes of the follow-group: welding by means of a transferred or semi-transferred arc plasma torch, or welding by means of a laser torch, the operation of coating or hard-surfacing by welding being followed by heat treatment.Another subject of the invention comprises the products obtained by the abovedescribed process. It is particularly applicable to the production of rolls for cold rolling mills, rolling or forming rollers, shear blades, wear plates, and armor plates.

    • A method for manufacturing hard-surfaced cast iron articles, such as rolls for use in the steel industry or paper calendering rolls, includes the steps of casting the article in a manner such that upon cooling the crystal structure of the article is that of grey cast iron and remelting the surface to be treated by directing at least one electron beam onto a zone of the surface to be treated and cooling the remelting zones in a rapid manner so that a hard surface is obtained. The electron beam may be directed onto the zone of the surface to be treated in a punctiform and/or lineal manner, in one or a plurality of partial steps, and in a continuous or stepwise manner. The apparatus of the invention includes at least one electron gun, apparatus for mounting the electron gun and the article relative to each other such that the electron gun can direct an electron beam onto the zone of the surface to be treated to remelt the same and apparatus for displacing the electron gun and article relative to each other.

    • Method and apparatus for producing cylindrical products having a range of hardness through a cross section such as a roll. The method includes conventional forging and heat treatment steps with or without the addition of a rapid water quench derived from direct impingement of a quench medium on the product as it rotates in a horizontal position, followed, as a final heat treatment, by subjection either to direct flame impingement in a horizontal, rotating condition or flame heat in a vertical furnace while rotating, again followed, preferably, by a drastic quench, and, also preferably an extremely low temperature deep freeze operation to thereby convert substantially all austenite to martensite. The invention makes possible the production of rolls capable of usage from original diameter to scrap diameter without reconditioning.
