    • A fuel injection pumping apparatus includes a governor which controls the size of an orifice through which fuel is supplied to an injection pump to determine the amount of fuel supplied by the pump to an associated engine. The governor includes a piston which at one end is subjected to fuel pressure and which bears at its other end against a spring connected in series with a spring. The spring is weaker than the spring so that at idling speed it is the spring which balances the force acting on the piston. Manually operable means is provided to effect movement of an abutment disposed between the springs, the spring acting to determine the maximum speed of the associated engine. When the engine has been started from cold, it is desirable to provide additional fuel to enable the engine to idle properly and for this purpose a device represented by the arrow, moves the end of the spring remote from the spring and this provides a temporary increase in the amount of fuel supplied at idling speeds.

    • A fuel injection pumping apparatus comprises an axially movable distributor member the axial setting of which determines the amount of fuel supplied by the apparatus at each pumping stroke. The distributor member is biassed by a spring in one axial direction and is movable in the opposite direction by varying the fluid pressure in a chamber through a port. The port is formed in a sleeve which is coupled to the distributor member by means of a lever and a rod member is axially movable within the sleeve. The axial position of the rod member can be varied to alter the effective size of the port and the distributor member and sleeve move because of the change in pressure in the space. A new equilibrium position is thus established with the distributor member following the movement of the rod member.

    • A fuel flow regulation device for a supercharged engine of the type having an injection pump whose piston's bottom position is determined by a moving stop, is disclosed. The fuel flow regulation device consists of a tridimensional cam contacting the stop and movable in an axial and a rotational direction. The axial movement of the cam is provided by a piston rod connected to a pair of pistons, one of which has a smaller diameter than the other by a predetermined amount, in which the pistons are oppositely subjected to engine intake pressure and engine exhaust pressure. The rotational movement of the cam is controlled by a jack subject to the output of a volumetric hydraulic pump actuated by the engine and pumping fluid from the engine cooling system.

    • A device for regulating a diesel motor driven feed pump which includes an injection pump associated with the diesel motor to control its operating speed, comprises a load, a variable pressure resistance connected by a feed line in series in series to the feed pump and a sump for the feed pump connected to the pressure resistance. In addition a control circuit is connected to the feed line and it includes a pressure scale portion and a limiting device portion each of which includes a respective pressure scale cylinder and limiting device cylinder portion for their respective coaxially arranged pressure scale piston and limiting piston slidable therein. A differential manometer is connected between the pressure scale portion and the limiting portion and it is admitted with the flow medium of respective differential pressures of the associated cylinders of these portions. A regulating drive is connected to the flow medium and it is admitted by the respective differential pressure between the two cylinders and it is connected to the injection pump to vary the operation of the pump.

    • An engine system includes a valve operable to permit exhaust gas to flow from the exhaust manifold to the air inlet manifold of an engine for the purpose of reducing the noxious gas content of the exhaust. The setting of the valve is dependent upon the amount of fuel supplied to the engine by the pump. A hydraulic signal is generated and this is derived from a supply pump by way of a fixed orifice this pressure being applied to a control valve which regulates the pressure applied to an actuator including a spring loaded piston. A throttle which controls the amount of fuel delivered by the injection pump also forms a further adjustable orifice downstream of the orifice whereby the pressure downstream of the orifice is dependent upon the amount of fuel supplied to the engine.
