    • Extracorporeal cell-based therapeutic devices and delivery systems are disclosed which provide a method for therapeutic delivery of biologically active molecules produced by living cells in response to a dynamic physiologic environment. One embodiment includes long hollow fibers in which a layer of cells are grown within the intraluminal volume or within a double hollow-filled chamber. Another embodiment includes a wafer or a series of wafers providing a substrate onto which cells are grown. The wafer(s) are inserted into a device. A device may deliver a pre-selected molecule, for example, a hormone, into a mammal's systemic circulation and/or may deliver a member of different cell products. The device is adapted to secure viable cells which produce and secrete the pre-selected molecule into blood or fluid. The invention also provides a minimally invasive method for percutaneously introducing into a preselected blood vessel or body cavity the device of the invention.

    • In a heat exchanger including a plurality of tubes 1 through which a first fluid passes, a housing 2 in which the tubes 1 are installed, and sealing members for sealing a second fluid that flows over surfaces of the tubes 1, the housing 2 includes an inlet 4 for introducing the second fluid therein and a first outlet 5 and second outlets 6 for discharging the second fluid, and the sealing members include a first sealing member 3a positioned on one of end sides of the tubes 1, a second sealing member 3b positioned on the other end side of the tubes 1, and a third sealing member 3c positioned between the first and second sealing members 3a and 3b. The third sealing member 3c is provided so that a gap 7 is provided between the first sealing member 3a and the third sealing member 3c while another gap 7 is provided between the second sealing member 3b and the third sealing member 3c, and that a flow path for the second fluid is formed therein. The second outlets 6 are provided so as to be connected to the gaps 7.

    • A device and method for enriching and/or depleting substances in a liquid is disclosed. An exemplary device comprises a membrane module that consists essentially of concentric elements and that has a separation element in which the substance to be enriched and/or depleted is carried, and whereby the liquid is carried outside of the separation element. The exemplary device also comprises a drive module that encompasses a drive unit for driving a conveying element that conveys the liquid, the drive unit having a radial magnetic coupling for a central impeller located on the inside. The exemplary device further comprises a conveying module for conveying the liquid through the device, housing the conveying element, whereby the drive module is adapted to be inserted into and removed from the membrane module with a liquid-tight closure. The exemplary device further an oxygenator having an outside fiber bundle and an inside fiber bundle. Finally, the exemplary device comprises an electromagnetic drive unit disposed between the outside fiber bundle and the inside fiber bundle.

    • There is provided a mass exchange apparatus for use in blood/air mass exchange comprising plural blood flow conduits for defining blood flow; and plural air flow conduits for defining air flow. The plural air flow conduits and the plural blood flow conduits at least partially comprise gas-permeate membrane material, and the conduits are arranged relative to each other such as to enable transfer of oxygen from the air to the blood and transfer of carbon dioxide from the blood to the air. The blood and air do not directly come into contact (i.e. the mass exchange is indirect). There is also provided a prosthetic lung comprising an elastic bellows and the at least one mass exchange apparatus herein. There is further provided an external respiratory aid to augment patient lung function comprising the at least one mass exchange apparatus herein and means to pump air and blood through the apparatus. There is further provided an intermediate respiratory aid apparatus for internal connection to a patient comprising at least one mass exchange apparatus herein and an air pump.
