    • A transport system within a fabrication system. The fabrication system contains a plurality of tool bays, each of which has a plurality of processing tools for processing articles. The transport system contains a plurality of intrabay transport subsystems, an interbay transport subsystem, a plurality of stockers, and at least one linking subsystem. Each intrabay transport subsystem is dedicated to transporting articles within a particular tool bay. The interbay transport subsystem, linking the tool bays, transports articles between the tool bays. The stockers, located between the intrabay and interbay transport subsystems, store articles between processing and transfer articles between the intrabay and interbay transport subsystems. The linking subsystem, located between two adjacent intrabay transport subsystems, provides direct transport between the two corresponding tool bays.

    • A multistation press has a three-axis transfer provided with transport rails onto which carrier rails are placed. The carrier rails carry grippers for the workpieces. During the tool change, the carrier rails are deposited on corresponding receiving devices of the sliding table. The transport rail is at first moved to deposit a first carrier rail connected therewith on the receiving device. Then the transport rail is separated from the carrier rail and is moved to bring a second carrier rail still connected therewith to the receiving device. The receiving device receives the second carrier rail in the immediate vicinity of the first carrier rail, whereby two carrier rails overlap and are spaced closely side-by-side. The receiving device is then laterally swivelled away. The carrier rails are deposited on the receiving device without the aid of driving devices operating between the transport rail and the carrier rail.

    • An identification structure is associated with the processing system according to the invention. The identification structure associated with the processing system essentially comprises multipart identifications, associated with elements of the system, as well as means associated with system elements enabling said elements to modify their own or other identifications.

    • An automatic welder is used in an internal welder unit which travels along the interior of a pipeline and provides the interior weld passes at the junction of abutting pipe joints. The internal welder unit has an electronic control system which includes a plurality of microprocessor control units, each of which performs specific functional operations for the internal welder unit. The microprocessor control units are interconnected by a serial communication link which permits the transmission of commands and data between all of the microprocessor control units. The control system includes a back end control unit positioned in the internal welder unit, a front end control unit with a panel in the weld unit, a reach rod control unit at the end of a reach rod and a power supply control unit adjacent the arc power supply. The control system directs the operation of orbiting internal welders to have a zero or slow travel speed at a start point to ensure a high reliability of arc initiation. After the arc is started, the travel speed of the internal welders is accelerated to a high speed rate for the majority of the weld pass. At the end of the weld pass, the welders travel rate and wire feed rate are suddenly reduced to zero for the weld termination. The control system can extend to include one or more external welders, as well as external monitoring and control devices, all of which communicate through the serial communication link.
