    • A method and apparatus are provided for flexible time-division multiplexing, and demultiplexing, of serial line data, from 1-n client lines, based on the SONET standard (e.g. OC-48 or OC-192) whereby a predetermined and reconfigurable number of STS-1s are allocated to each client. A multiplexer includes 1 to n mappers for mapping the data of 1 to n clients, according to a predetermined bandwidth allocation, to an NnullSTS-1 SON ET payload, each mapper using y STS-1s where y is 0 to N, the y STS-1s being selected on a sequential or non-sequential concatenation basis from the N STS-1s. Each mapper maps the data of one client and each allocated STS-1 is allocated to one client and the total number of STS-1s allocated to the clients is less than or equal to N. An aggregator aggregates the mapped data into a composite STS payload comprising N STS-1s. A bandwidth allocation receiver receives the bandwidth allocation. The bandwidth allocation may be received from a source external to the multiplexer and the source may be a network controller. A demultiplexer includes a deaggregator for deaggregating the STS payload to provide the mapped data for the clients. 1 to n demappers demap the client data according to the predetermined bandwidth allocation. A bandwidth allocation receiver receives the bandwidth allocation.

    • A word alignment mechanism of a series-parallel converter is kept away from errors when multiplexing Gigabit Ethernet signals. The errors result from K28.5 codes in the low-order 10 bits of the Gigabit Ethernet signals. The clock rates of two Gigabit Ethernet signals are adjusted by transmitting each signal via an optical transceiver, a series-parallel converter, and an elastic smoother. The K28.5 codes of only the highest order Gigabit Ethernet signal are preserved, while the K28.5 codes for all other signals are converted to different codes using a code swapper and supplied to the series-parallel converter, which outputs a multiplexed signal. When recovering the original signals from the multiplexed signal, the different codes are converted back to the K28.5 codes.

    • A method and system are provided for remultiplexing program bearing data. The remultiplexing method and system are applicable to MPEG-2 compliant transport streams carrying video programs. A descriptor based system is used for scheduling the timely output of transport packets wherein each descriptor records a dispatch time as well as a receipt time for each transport packet. The receipt time is used for estimating program clock reference adjustments, but final program clock reference adjustment is performed in hardware in relation to the precise output timing of each transport packets. A descriptor and transport packet caching technique is used for decoupling the synchronous receipt and transmission of transport packets from any asynchronous processing performed thereon. The descriptors can also be used for managing scrambling and descrambling control words (encryption and decryption keys). Remultiplexing functions may be distributed across a network. The remultiplexer can furthermore optimize the bandwidth of transport streams by replacing null transport packets with transport packet data to be inserted into the output transport stream. Program data transmitted via asynchronous communication links is re-timed and assistance is provided for outputting program data on such asynchronous communication links to reduce a variation in end-to-end delay incurred by the program data. Remultiplexing and program specific information can be searnlessly dynamically varied without stopping, or introducing a discontinuity in, the flow of outputted transport packets. A technique is also provided for locking multiple internal reference clock generators.

    • The communication control system of the present invention includes a cell buffer assembly that is common to a plurality of input ports and stores cells. A writing controller and a reading controller respectively control a process of writing a cell into the cell buffer assembly and a process of reading a cell from the cell buffer assembly. A writing time management memory maps a writing time of each cell to each area in the cell buffer assembly and manages the mapping. A cell discard controller discards a cell having a long elapsed time since the writing time stored in the writing time management memory by the processing, which is independent of the processing by the writing controller and the reading controller. The arrangement of discarding the oldest cell independently of the writing and reading operations enables efficient discard of cells, while ensuring a desired communication rate. This arrangement simplifies the cell discard control and enhances its efficiency in the case of convergence in multiplex communication in the form of fixed-length cells.

    • The present invention provides a technique to reduce the number of RF components by using digital signal processing functions in wireless receivers having two or more antennas, which results in the reduction of system cost. The reduction occurs by using a multiplexer or switch to sample the signal received by each of the antennas. The sampling rate of the multiplexer or switch is greater than the Nyquist required sampling rate (Fs) of the received signal bandwidth. The sampled signal is a multiplexed single analog (RF) signal, which only requires one chain of receiver components. A signal processor then is able to demultiplex the received signal at a lower frequency and can perform several functions including antenna diversity and beam forming utilizing digital signals at IF or baseband frequencies.
