    • This invention provides an optical fiber connector that includes a tubular receptacle with a lens at its central portion and fiber termination units extending into its opposite ends. Each of the fiber termination units includes two elements, one telescopingly received in the other and resiliently biased toward the lens. A nut engages either end of the receptacle and the outer element of the fiber termination unit, biasing the latter element against a positive stop which limits its axial travel toward the lens. A single seal at each nut engages the receptacle and the fiber termination unit to preclude entry of foreign matter. The fibers are gripped by resilient members compressed around the fibers by crimped portions of the fiber holding units. An elongated tool, with spaced shoulders, positions the lens and its retention springs at the center of the receptacle.

    • An optically-coupled device package including a housing containing an optical device further includes an optical fiber assembly which comprises an optical cable with a support sleeve on its end. The support sleeve comprises a body with an axial opening therethrough and has a plurality of holes near a first end. The optical cable includes a first portion comprising a protective coating overlying an optical fiber, and a second portion comprising an optical fiber extending from said coating. The cable enters the first end of the sleeve and nodules integral with the protective coating extend into the plurality of holes. In one embodiment, the optical fiber is sealed to the inside of the sleeve through a solder window provided through the side of the sleeve. The second end of the sleeve extends through an aperture in said housing and is aligned to the device therein. The invention also includes a method for making such a fiber assembly which comprises inserting the optical cable into a first end of the sleeve, forming nodules integral with the protective coating which extend into the plurality of holes. The method may comprise sealing the optical fiber to the inside of the sleeve through a solder window in said sleeve. Fabrication of an optically-coupled device package further comprises inserting the fiber assembly through an aperture in said housing and aligning said fiber with the optical device therein.

    • Precise alignment, required for a low-loss electromagnetic interconnection between single and multiple stranded optical fiber conductors or waveguides, is achieved in a conventional electrical connector block. A pair of guide bushings having precise outer dimensions are secured respectively to the termini of the optical fiber conductors and these bushings, in their respective connector blocks, are adapted for insertion into a split tube having a precisely dimensioned inner diameter. The optical fiber conductors, being concentric with the bushings, thereby are precisely interconnected. For single fibers, the bushings and the split tube are cylindrical. For multiple stranded fibers or fiber bundles, the bushings and the split tube have identical polygonal cross-sections, which match precisely identical polygonally shaped fiber-receiving openings in the bushings. Physical contact between the electromagnetically coupled fiber optic conductors is prevented by a flat annular shim which is loosely secured to the split tube and contacted by the bushings.
