    • A method, system and apparatus for minimizing the amounts of undesirable pollutants emitted from an internal combustion engine after combustion of a fuel-air mixture within a cylinder of said engine in which a portion of the products of combustion of a given operating cycle, which portion contains a higher proportion of noxious constituents than does the expelled portion of such products, is retained in the cylinder and is mixed with the incoming charge for the next operating cycle. One particular form of the invention comprises varying the proportion of such retained products according to engine operating conditions in order to maintain the dilution of such incoming charge at the maximum level consistent with good engine performance. The retained products are in an amount in excess of that normally retained in the cylinder clearance volume at the exhaust manifold pressure.

    • A speed governor is used with an engine having a crankshaft and a balancer shaft arranged substantially in parallel to the crankshaft, in which a drive gear provided in the crankshaft and a driven gear provided in the balancer shaft are meshed with each other so as to transmit mechanical power. The speed governor includes a plurality of flyweights pivotally supported on the driven gear of the balancer shaft by the plurality of support pins. The driven gear has a recess portion on an end surface thereof, and the support pins supporting the flyweights are arranged in the recess portion. Each of the support pins has two ends in a longitudinal direction and through holes are respectively located at the ends of the support pins.

    • A four-cycle internal combustion engine having a cylinder provided with a head end and a crank case end with a fuel inlet in the head end an exhaust outlet opening in the cylinder wall in position to be passed by the pistons and spaced from the head end of the cylinder a distance equal to a major portion of the stroke of the piston in the cylinder, the disclosure also including an exhaust valve in the head end of the cylinder communicating with an exhaust recycling conduit adapted to recycle exhaust gases into an intake manifold, and a flow valve intercommunicating with said exhaust gas recycling conduit and said intake manifold for coordinating or modulating flow of recycled exhaust gases into the intake manifold in relation to fuel being conducted to said fuel inlet valve in the head end of said cylinder. Also disclosed is an engine similar to the foregoing wherein the first mentioned exhaust outlet opening is provided with an exhaust valve held closed in spring loaded relation with said outlet opening and so adjusted as atmosphere provide an exhaust outflow to atmospheric according to combustion pressure in the cylinder when the piston passes to a position near the end of its stroke. The disclosure also relating to a second conduit communicating with said gas recycling conduit, said second conduit communicating with an exhaust manifold disposed to receive exhaust gases from said exhaust gas outlet opening, said second conduit adapted to conduct part of the exhaust gases from said exhaust valve in the head end of said cylinder to said exhaust manifold whereby a portion of the exhaust gases passing from said exhaust valves are mixed with the hot gases passing from said exhaust gas outlet and are thereby burned in said exhaust manifold.

    • A 4-cycle, internal combustion engine comprising a crankcase and a pair of cylinders, each cylinder being open at one end into communication with the crankcase. Each cylinder is provided with an inlet port, and a crankshaft is disposed in the crankcase to be adjacent the open ends of the cylinders. A piston is reciprocably received in each cylinder to define therewithin a variable-volume combustion chamber, each piston being drivingly connected in a conventional manner to the crankshaft. A system is provided for admitting a gaseous mixture to the crankcase, and there is a passageway leading from the crankcase to each inlet port. valves are provided for respectively opening and closing the passageways, the valves being drivingly connected to and operated by the crankshaft. The valves are arranged and driven such that each passageway is opened only on alternate occasions when both pistons move toward the axis of the crankshaft. Thus, the pumping action of both pistons drives the gaseous mixture through the only open passageway into one of the two cylinders. The inlet port and an exhaust port is provided in the side wall of each cylinder at peripherally spaced apart points remote from the closed end of the cylinder. An auxiliary chamber in open communication with each exhaust port is provided, each said auxiliary chamber being provided with a port at a point remote from the point of communication of the chamber with the cylinder exhaust port. A butterfly valve is provided for dominating each auxiliary chamber port, the butterfly valve being drivingly connected to the crankshaft.
