    • An electronic device for securing the contents of data storage and processing elements. The device includes a security element and a phase-change element connected in a parallel arrangement. The security element is a three-terminal device, such as a conventional transistor or three-terminal phase-change device, having an ON state and an OFF state which differ with respect to resistance and regulate electronic access to the phase-change element by controlling the flow of electrical current applied to the parallel combination. In the ON state, the resistance of the security element is less than that of the phase-change element, thereby preventing, inhibiting or confusion a determination of the resistance of the phase-change element. In this PROTECT mode, the contents of the phase-change element are secured. In the OFF state, the resistance of the security element is greater than that of the phase-change material so that the resistance of the parallel combination approaches that of the phase-change element. In this READ mode, the resistance and information content of the phase-change element can be determined. The phase-change element includes a phase-change material and is preferably a chalcogenide based element.     • A multi-terminal logic device. The device includes a phase change material having crystalline and amorphous states in electrical communication with three or more electrical terminals. The phase change material is able to undergo reversible transformations between amorphous and crystalline states in response to applied electrical energy where the amorphous and crystalline states show measurably distinct electrical resistances. Electrical energy in the form of current or voltage pulses applied between a pair of terminals influences the structural state and measured electrical resistance between the terminals. In the instant devices, independent input signals are provided between different pairs of terminals and the output is measured as the resistance between yet another pair of terminals. Logic functionality is achieved through relationships between the applied input signals and the measured output resistance where the relationship is governed by the effect of the input signals on the structural state and electrical resistance of the phase change material. Logic values may be associated with the crystalline and amorphous states of the phase change material or the measured resistance between a pair of terminals.

    • Disclosed herein is an improved gas gate for interconnecting regions of differing gaseous composition and/or pressure, more particularly between atmosphere and a vacuum. The gas gate includes a cylinder within a housing situated between the regions of differing gaseous pressure. A web of substrate material is adapted to move between the regions with at least one roller in the first region and at least one roller in the second region. The rollers are positioned to create sufficient tension as the web advances over the top peripheral portion of the cylinder between the two regions or under the bottom peripheral portion of the cylinder between the two regions. In an exemplary embodiment, the gas gate is characterized by the height of the passageway between the top plate of the housing and web of substrate advancing over the top peripheral portion of the cylinder and the height of the passageway between the bottom plate of the housing and the bottom peripheral portion of the cylinder. The flow rate of the gas therethrough provides for transonic flow of the gas between the cylinder inlets and at least one of the two interconnected regions, thereby effectively isolating one region, characterized by one composition and pressure, from another region, having a differing composition and/or pressure, by decreasing the mean-free-path length between collisions of diffusing species within the transonic flow region.
