    • PURPOSE: A method to measure the expansion of a polymer foam and a device used therefor are provided to measure the thickness of the polymer foam every x seconds, where x is between 0.05 and 0.15 and to record the thickness by a function of time. CONSTITUTION: A method to measure the expansion of a polymer foam comprises the steps of: extruding a free foam polymer form including one or more foaming agents; supplying the extruded form through a rectangular die (12) and generating a foam with a front surface unit in a die exit; measuring the thickness of a foam formed in a die nozzle (14) using a laser thickness measuring device including a vertical transfer device (20) driven by a laser motor drive (22); controlling the vertical position of a laser as the laser is attached to the vertical transfer device; controlling the speed of the motor driver to be transferred at the vertical transfer speed which is identical with the vertical transfer speed of the front surface unit of the foam where the laser passes through the die; recording the thickness of the foam; and repeatedly measuring the thickness of the foam every x seconds, where x is between 0.05 and 0.15 and recording the thickness as a function of time.
