    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of continuously producing a single crystal by using a temperature gradient furnace, which forms a desired temperature gradient without needing a heat source, and uniforms the temperature distribution in the cross section.
      SOLUTION: A temperature gradient furnace 100 including a heat insulating wall 104 surrounding the outer circumference of a columnar work W, a heating part 108 for heating the lower edge WB of the columnar work through a susceptor 110 for heating, and a cooling part 112 for cooling the upper end WT of the columnar work through a susceptor 114 for cooling is used. A raw material bar 10, a solvent 12, a seed crystal 14, and a support bar 16 are laminated to form the columnar work W. The bottom of the raw material bar 10, as the bottom WB of the columnar work, is heated with the heating part 108; and the top of the support bar 16, as the top WT of the columnar work, is cooled with the cooling part 112. Thus, a temperature gradient in the columnar work W is formed through the solvent 12; the heating temperature of the bottom WB of the columnar work is decreased gradually; and the temperature of the top WT is decreased simultaneously to thereby continuously grow a single crystal downward from the seed crystal 14, which is the starting point.
