    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a portable terminal device and a portable terminal system capable of implementing calibration of orientation sensors correctly.
      SOLUTION: The portable terminal device 1 having an orientation sensor is fixed to a holder 3 on board to connect with a car navigation device 2 through a telecommunication cable 4. The portable terminal device 1 receives orientation information detected at the car navigation device 2 and calibration of the orientating sensor is started at the time when received orientation information becomes more than 90-degree. On the other hand, calibration utilizes not only the magnetic field data detected by the orientating sensor of portable terminal device 1 but also orientation information of higher reliability received from the car navigation device 2.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electronic map display apparatus which displays a map so that the north of the map automatically is aligned with the true (geographic or magnetic) north when displaying a digital map.
      SOLUTION: The digital map display apparatus 10 comprises a positioning device 14, a map data access part 16 for accessing to a map database part 16, an electronic compass 12, a processor 20, and a display screen 22. Based on the data from the positioning system 14, the electronic compass 12, and the map database, the processor 20 operates to display an area map including own position of the device 10 on the display screen 22 so that the north of the map always is aligned with the true (geographic or magnetic) north.
