    • PURPOSE:To improve combustion in both high and low load ranges of a Diesel engine to reduce the fuel consumption rate and the amount of detrimental components in exhaust gas, by providing such an arrangement that the timing of initiation of fuel injection is made remarkably earlier when the load of the engine lowers, in comparison with the timing of initiation of fuel injection upon large load operation. CONSTITUTION:The engine load L is taken along the ordinate, and the crank angle theta at which the fuel injection is initiated and the opening rate R of the exhaust control valve are taken along the abscissa. Further, the broken lines E, G exhibit the opening rates R of intake and exhaust control valves, repsectively, and the chain line F exhibits the timing of initiation of fuel injection in a conventional Diesel engine. In this case, the timing of initiation of fuel injection is set to be effected at a point in the vicinity of 120 deg. before the TDC in each compression stroke upon low load operation. It is noted that this timing of initiation of fuel injection is actually possible during the period from a point in the vicinity of 90 deg. of the TDC in each expansion stroke to a point in the vicinity of 130 deg. after the BTD of each of exhaust, suction and compression stroke. Further, as the load increases, the timing of initiation of fuel injection is gradually retarded, and it is set at a point in the vicinity of 10 deg. of the TDC in the range of the load L0.
