SOLUTION: The rear bicycle derailleur is provided with a base member 10, a linkage mechanism 11, a movable member 12, a chain guide 13, a spring member 14 and a spring lock part 15. The base member is a member possible to be installed in a rear part of a frame. The link mechanism is a mechanism turnably connected to the base member. The movable member is a member connected to the linkage mechanism to move in a direction separating from the frame with turn of the link mechanism. The chain guide is connected to the movable member freely to swing. The spring member is a member for energizing the movable member. The spring lock part can selectively lock the spring member between the first energizing condition wherein the spring member energizes the movable member in a direction separating from the frame and the second energizing condition wherein the spring member energizes the movable member in a direction coming close to the frame.

SOLUTION: The transmission for the bicycle comprises a derailleur shaft 81 which is supported by a case member provided on a body frame and has a guide hole 81a formed therein, a derailleur arm 82 pivotally supported by the derailleur shaft 81 so as to move, a guide rotar 86 which is rotatably supported by the derailleur arm 82, and is wound with an endless transmission belt capable of being shifted between rotary elements which compose a speed changing rotar 50 and change a plurality of speed changing ratios, and an operation pin 65 which is connected to a wire 62 to advance and recede according to a speed changing operation and, and is fitted to the base end portion of the derailleur arm 82, and swivels by being guided by the guide hole 81a of the derailleur shaft 81. The derailleur arm 82 swivels with respect to the derailleur shaft 81 and is translated in the axial direction of the derailleur shaft 81 by moving the operation pin 65 so as to be guided by the guide hole 81a via the wire 62 by the speed changing operation. A roller 66 rotatably supported by the operation pin 65 is rollably fitted in the guide hole 81a.

Here by pressing the chain to the side of low gear 11 with only restoring force of the return spring 25, in the case that large tension acts in the chain in acceleration and during ascent running, a forcing shift down to the side of low gear 11 is not performed, so as to perform a natural speed change under suitable chain tension.
