A drive current for driving the spin torque oscillation element is passed from the spin torque oscillation element to the second and first cooling layers.

The thin-film magnetic head 300 has a shield magnetic layer 40. The shield magnetic layer 40 has a leading shield part 47. The leading shield part 47 is disposed on a substrate 1 side of the main magnetic pole layer 26. The leading shield part 47 has a variable distance structure in which a rearmost part most distanced from an ABS 30 is distanced more from the main magnetic pole layer 26 than a foremost part on the main magnetic pole layer 26 side.

摘要： PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To accurately determine contact of head/disk while reducing the number of transmission lines between a head IC and a controller IC. SOLUTION: An AE13 including a circuit amplifying the signal of a head/slider has contact detecting circuits 135, 136 detecting the contact of a head/slider and a magnetic disk. The contact detecting circuit decides contact frequency of the head/slider and the magnetic disk using a servo/gate synchronizing signal from an HDC 23. When contact frequency exceeds the threshold value, the contact detecting circuit notifies a controller of an error. Thereby, reduction of performance by erroneous detection of contact can be avoided. The AE uses the servo/gate synchronizing signal also in the other function. 摘要： Recently, it is observed that a write head's material having a great thermal expansion coefficient expands due to Joule heat resulting from a write current and a temperature rise dependent on high-frequency core loss, thereby causing the head's flying surface to protrude toward a magnetic disk. This phenomenon is called TPR (thermal protrusion). It is essential that the flying height be accurately determined and managed in consideration of TPR. A magnetic disk drive for actual use or a magnetic disk drive that is in a testing process but similar to the one for actual use is used to measure TPR amount changes resulting from a write operation, store the resulting measured data in a memory or on the magnetic disk, and exercise flying height management with the stored measured data. Further, flying height management is exercised as needed in conjunction with a SMART function. The present invention makes it possible to exercise high-reliability flying height management.
