    • PURPOSE:To obtain an optical switch which decreases attenuation of light and is simple and inexpensive, by the constitution wherein the forward end parts of a pair of optical fibers disposed so as to face each other are immersed and are not immersed in deformable magnetic fluid having no light transmittivity. CONSTITUTION:An electromagnet 15 is not energized while a switch 8 is held open. The magnetic fluid 13 in a box body 11 in this stage is attracted downward by a permanent magnet 14 and optical fibers 1, 2 are held immersed in refractive index matching liquid 12. The light propagating in the fiber 1 is transmitted through the liquid 12 into the fiber 2. When the electromagnet 7 is energized by closing the switch 8, the magnetic fluid 13 concentrates toward the central part where the magnetic field in the box body 11 is strong, and the forward end faces of the fibers 1, 2 are immersed in the fluid 13. The light propagating in the fiber 1 is interrupted by the fluid 13. The attention of light is thus decreased and the simple and inexpensive optical switch is obtd.
