    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable exact lockup, and to avoid an influence from being exerted on a torque amplification function, in a torque converter using a magnetic viscous fluid.SOLUTION: A clutch member 45 connected to a turbine runner 5 is arranged in a converter housing 10 which is formed by connecting a drive plate 12 and a pump impeller 20 by a yoke 30, and the internal peripheral cylindrical face of the yoke 30, a first clutch plate 41 continuous to the face, and second and third clutch plates 47, 49 arranged at the external periphery of the clutch member 45 are made to alternately oppose one another at prescribed intervals, thus constituting a clutch mechanism CL of a multi-plated constitution. The clutch mechanism is positioned outside a circulation passage which is formed between the pump impeller and the turbine runner, magnetic flux changes the yield stress of the magnetic viscous fluid between and among the respective clutch plates and can lock up the stress by the electricity-carrying of the coil 38 wound around the yoke 30, and on the other hand, the torque amplification function is not hindered since the influence is not exerted on the magnetic viscous fluid in the circulation passage.
