    • PURPOSE:To improve the engagement between a pinion and a ring gear by slowly shifting the pinion to the ring gear side by a retention coil only, by releasing a switch means by a position detecting means until the pinion contacts with the ring gear after a plunger shifts. CONSTITUTION:When the captioned starter is not in operation, a movable contact-point 38 and a fixed contact-point 40 are in contact state, and a microswitch 25 is in closed state. Therefore, when a key switch 3 is closed, an attraction coil 4 and a retention coil 5 are excited to conduction, and a plunger collection body 8 is suction-accelerated. When a rod 39 is pressed into the cam groove 30 of the plunger collection body 8, the fixed contact-point 40 and the movable contact-point 38 are separated each other, and the conduction to the attraction coil 4 is cut-off, and the attraction force is reduced to the load of the turn spring 35 of the plunger collection body 8. Then, since the plunger collection body 8 is transferred by the attraction force of the retention coil 5 only, a pinion 12 can be shifted slowly to a ring gear 12 side through a lever 9.
