    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sewing machine which transfers a user's stepping force of a foot roller to a variable resistor with high transfer efficiency.SOLUTION: A sewing machine includes: a foot controller in which a stepping casing is displaceable in accordance with a user's stepping amount; a moving device which is incorporated in the foot controller and moves in accordance with the displacement amount of the stepping casing; a variable resistor 25 which is incorporated in the foot controller and capable of changing a resistance value in accordance with the moving amount of the moving device; and a motor which changes the sewing speed in accordance with the resistance value of the variable resistor 25. The moving device comprises a vertical rack 22 which is pressed by the stepping casing and moves in the stepping direction of the foot controller; a gear 23 which engages with the vertical rack 22 and converts the moving amount of the vertical rack 22 into a rotation amount; and a horizontal rack 24 which engages with the gear 23, which moves in the direction perpendicular to the moving direction of the vertical rack 22 by the moving amount in accordance with the rotation amount of the gear 23, and which changes the resistance value of the variable resistor 25 in accordance with the moving amount of the horizontal rack 24.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an actuation device improved so that the actuation force of an actuating element is adjusted as easily as possible.
      SOLUTION: A sewing machine has the actuation device, especially a foot pedal device for actuating the sewing machine. The foot pedal device 8 has an actuating element 13, especially a foot pedal. A pre-loading device of the actuation device has an actuating element pre-loading body 20, especially a pedal pre-loading body 20. The pre-loading body 20 is joint-connected to the foot pedal 13, a housing body, and pre-loading springs 23, 24 to pre-load relative movement of the drive pre-loading body 20 to the housing body 21, based on a movement of the actuating element 13. Pre-load force of the pre-loading spring 23 is adjusted by using an adjusting device 29. The actuation device uses such a mechanism that the actuation force of the actuating element can easily be adjusted.
