    • PURPOSE: To obtain a safe, high-performance, water-absorptive resin, by polymerizing a lower-alkyl acrylate with a polyalcohol ester of a monoethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid in an aqueous medium, saponifying the polymer, and then neutralizing the saponificate.
      CONSTITUTION: 1mol of a lower-alkyl acrylate (e.g., methyl acrylate) is polymerized with 0.07W0.5mol of a polyalcohol ester of a monoethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid (e.g., hydroxypropyl methacrylate) by a dispersion polymerization process in the absence of any emulsifier in an aqueous medium. Then, the produced polymer is saponified with a basic substance (e.g., sodium hydroxide) in a water/lower alcohol medium. Then, the saponificate is neutralized with hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid or the like to obtain the purpose water- absorptive resin. The water-absorptive resin thus produced can be used suitably in the production of paper diapers, sanitary articles, disposable dustcloths.
