    • NEW MATERIAL:An amphoteric compound of formula I (h+i+j+k+l+m+n is less than 10; X is hydrophilic group).
      EXAMPLE: β-(9-Benzylanthryl)propionic acid.
      USE: A substance for Langmuri-Blodgett's films or synthetic bilayer films. Insulation layers for a variety of devices, thermoionic elements, or light-sensing elements. The compound is characterized by substitution of anthracene with a hydrophobic group and a hydrophilic group in the 9- and 10-positions, respectively.
      PREPARATION: For example, the Grignard reaction between anthrone and an alkyl-substituted phenylalkylbromide is effected, the product is chlkoromethylated to give 9-alkyl-substituted phenylalkyl-10-chloromethylanthracene. The compound is allowed to react with NaCH(COOC

      5 )
      2 to give a compound of formula II. Then, the product is subjected to alkali decomposition and acidified to give a dicarboxylic acid of formula III.
