    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sorting apparatus that is capable of sorting by excluding sheets having a high possibility of causing failure in mechanical processing such as a sealed letter with a metal piece enclosed or by conveying to a processing unit in a later stage, without excluding, a tracking letter in which a metal piece is placed at a specific position or a clip letter in which a small metal piece such as a clasp is fixed in an optional position. SOLUTION: The sorting apparatus conveys a sheet P in an erecting position, and detects, at various heights, the presence/absence of metal pieces in the sheet P conveyed in the erecting position, by using a plurality of metal detection sensors 65a-65d. The sorting apparatus detects a tracking letter in which a metal piece is placed at a specific position or a clip letter containing a small metal piece whose position is fixed, on the basis of the detection result obtained by each metal detection sensor 65a-65d, and sorts the tracking letter or the clip letter in the same manner as a normal letter.     • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent damage caused on a sorting object.SOLUTION: The sorting apparatus 1 has a cylinder shaft P1 intersecting with the vertical direction, and a cylindrical rotary drum 2 sorting the inside sorting object A. The rotary drum 2 includes a plurality of sorting plates 10 extended along the cylinder shaft P1 and annularly set therearound, and a supporting and urging mechanism urging the tip ends of the respective sorting plates 10 toward the radial outer direction. The tip ends of the respective sorting plates 10 are superposed at a base end part of the other adjacent sorting plate 10 via a space C; the sorting object A with a given thickness or less is passed through the space C and sorted, and the sorting object A moved upward being sandwiched in the space C is dropped by self-weight. The sorting device 1 includes a receiving plate wheel 40 set inside the rotary drum 2, having three or more of receiving plates 42 with spaces from each other, around a rotary shaft P2 extended along the cylinder shaft P1, and rotated around the rotary shaft P2 keeping a space from the sorting plate 10 in the same direction as the rotation direction.
