    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To control the turning in a lifter bore without deteriorating slidability of a valve lifter, enlarging a cylinder head and increasing mass of moving parts of a valve driving device. SOLUTION: An inlet side valve 18 is connected to an inlet cam 11 through a valve lifter 19 which is supported in a lifter bore 22. A cam follower 27 is rotatably supported on the upper face 19c of the valve lifter 19 along a cam face 11a. On the inner circumferential surface of the lifter bore 22, a fitting groove is formed so as to lie along the driving direction of the inlet side valve 18, while on the outer surface 19a of the valve lifter 19, a projection engaging part 24 which engages with the fitting groove 23, is provided then the projection engaging part 24 is fitted to the engaging groove 23. The oscillating direction of the cam follower 27 is determined in the rotating axis direction of the inlet side cam shaft 10 by engaging the engaging groove with a protrusive engagement part 24. In this case the groove and projective engaging part 24 should be located at an intermediate position between the either side of which is in the rotating axis direction of the inlet side cam shaft 10 and the either side of which is in the orthogonal direction to the rotating axis direction of the inlet cam shaft 10.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a VVT mechanism with a plurality of link mechanisms whose failures are detected.
      SOLUTION: The intake VVT mechanism comprises the link mechanism (A) and the link mechanism (B) connected to an intake cam shaft for operating to change the phase of an intake valve, a control pin (A)2034 for sliding in a guide groove (A)2041 of a guide plate 2040 to operate the link mechanism (A), and a control pin (B)2134 for sliding in a guide mechanism (B)2042 of the guide plate 2040 to operate the link mechanism (B). When the control pin (A)2034 and the control pin (B)2134 are moved in the direction of delaying the phase until the control pin (A)2034 abuts on the end of the guide groove (A)2041, the control pin (B)2134 is separated from the end of the guide groove (B)2042.
