    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an air bag which promptly generates prescribed reaction force when activated, improves restraint on a passenger at an early stage of inflation and is developable at a prescribed position in a stable condition. SOLUTION: The air bag 41 is provided with a tether 60 which bridges a base cloth 45 on an attaching side and a base cloth 46 on a two-way side and regulates an inflating shape of a bag part 47. The tether 60 is provided with a means 62 for varying the quantity of elongation set up to enlarge the quantity of elongation of the tether 60 so that the bag part 47 maintains the first inflating condition when gas is supplied inside the bag part 47 and the bag part 47 is moved to the second inflating condition when pressure of the gas inside the bag part 47 is increased from the first inflating condition to a level exceeding a prescribed value. The means 62 for varying the quantity of elongation is formed by a turnup part 63 having a temporary stopper part 65 which is seamed so that an overlap part 64 of a tether member 61 isolates from one another when internal pressure of the bag part 47 is increased above the prescribed value.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide the air bag for an air bag device, which can be simply manufactured even if tethers provided with a diffuser part are disposed inside the device. SOLUTION: Tethers 6 and 6 are disposed within the air bag 1, which allow the circumferential periphery of a gas inflow port 3 and a ceiling wall part faced to the gas inflow port 3 to be sewn so as to allow its expanded shape to be restricted. The tethers 6 and 6 are provided with a diffuser part 9 which covers the ceiling wall part 5 side of the gas inflow port 3 so as to restrict the flow of expanding gas flowing in from the gas inflow port 3. The diffuser part 9 is formed out of two based part side area 7 which are extended from the two places of the circumferential periphery of the gas inflow port 3 while the gas inflow port is being held in between the tethers 6 and 6, and the tip end areas 7a of the two base side areas 7 are mutually sewn so as to be formed therein.

    • PURPOSE: To ensure the driver/passenger protecting function at an early stage of spreading while the shock applied at the time of contact with the person is relieved, by retarding the moving speed of the foremost part when the air bag is spreading. CONSTITUTION: Those areas of an air bag 14 lying outside of two planes extending parallel on the two sides of the center line in the spread condition are folded to inside the planes so that a band shape is generated, and this band-shaped portion is folded into two fragments so that the first folded part 18 is formed. This first folded part 18 is grasped by a grasping device 44 composed of the claw part 29 of a gripper claw 27 and a gripping projection 42 on a steering wheel pad 12. The grasping force of the grasping device 44 is set to a size not admitting separation of the first folded part 18 until that part of air bag 14 nearer the crest 22 than the first folded part 18 completes the spread, and first the nearer the crest 22 spreads to produce an initially spread shape, and then the part nearer the base end 20 spreads so that the intended final shape of spread is accomplished. Grasp of the grasping device 44 retards the protruding speed of the foremost part.

SOLUTION: An attachment side ground fabric 45 and a facing side ground fabric 46 are sewn integrally at a lower half part of the air bag 38 to provide a sewing part 53 so that the sewing part 53 corresponds to a rim part 22 of a steering wheel 21 in an expansion state. A main bag part 47 is provided in an inner side of the sewing part 53, and a peripheral bag part 55 is provided in a peripheral side of the sewing part 53, respectively. A passage 54 for connecting the main bag part 47 and the peripheral bag part 55 is formed in a center of the sewing part 53 in such a manner to divide the sewing part 53. Thus, the air bag 38 swells and expands thickly in an upper half part and thinly in the lower half part when gas is supplied to the air bag 38 from an inflater.

SOLUTION: An air bag 21 comprises a vehicle-body-side foundation cloth 22 having an opening 22a via which an inflater is inserted, an occupant-side foundation cloth 23 which has a ceiling portion 23a opposed to the opening 22a and whose circumferential edge is sewn on that of the body-side foundation cloth 22, and two inflation restriction members 24 interconnecting the edge of the opening 22a of the body-side foundation cloth 22 and the ceiling portion 23a of the occupant-side foundation cloth 23. The air bag 21 has two inside cloth pieces 25 having a base and one leg 25d extending from it. The bases of the inside cloth pieces 25 are placed one on the other and sewn to the edge of the opening 22a of the body-side foundation cloth 22, while the legs 25d are sewn as the inflation restriction members 24 to the ceiling portion 23a of the occupant-side foundation cloth 23.
