摘要： PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a carbon-coating apparatus for applying a carbon coating to a drawn optical fiber and provide a method for forming the carbon coating film. SOLUTION: This carbon-coating apparatus is provided with a reaction chamber 39 placed under a drawing furnace and applying a carbon coating film to an optical fiber inserted into the chamber and sealing chambers placed at the upper and lower parts of the reaction chamber to seal the atmosphere in the reaction chamber from the outer atmosphere. The sealing chamber 43 at the upper part of the reaction chamber 39 has an inert gas inlet port 46 and the lower sealing chamber 48 has an air inlet port 51. The upper part of the reaction chamber 39 to receive the optical fiber is provided with a raw material gas inlet port 37 for forming a carbon coating film and an exhaustion port 38 to exhaust the atmosphere of the reaction chamber 39 is formed at the lower side of the reaction chamber to deliver the coated optical fiber.

摘要： PURPOSE:To prevent the degradation in tensile strength by incorporating helium into the atmosphere in a coating vessel in the production of the hermetically coated fiber. CONSTITUTION:A bare fiber 10 obtd. by drawing a perform of a glass fiber in a drawing furnace is sent from above into the coating reaction vessel heated to a high temp. A sealing gas 2 (e.g. N2 mixed with He) is introduced into the reaction vessel 1 in order to maintain a discharge system 6 in a reduced pressure state. Gaseous raw materials 3 of a carbon system (e.g. C2H4) formed by using hologenated hydrocarbons (e.g. CHCl3) as an auxiliary raw material (gas) at need are mixed by bubbling in a bubbler 5 using the gaseous helium as a carrier gas 4 and thereafter, the gaseous raw materials are introduced into the reaction vessel 1. The introducing concn. of the gaseous helium is specified to 5 to 30%. The gaseous raw materials 3 receive a thermochemical change at this time and forms a carbon film on the fiber 10. The fiber is then subjected to resin coating, by which the hermetically coated fiber is obtd.

摘要： PURPOSE:To obviate the generation of connection loss by the mis-alignment of optical axes and to assure surface protection by forming thin films of metals, ceramics or carbon on the surfaces of glass fibers from which the coatings at the front ends of the optical fibers are removed, then butting the ends of the optical fiber and fusion splicing the fibers. CONSTITUTION:The coatings 3 at the ends of the optical fibers 1 are first removed and the front ends are cut, by which mirror finished surface are obtd. These optical fibers 1 are then put into a chamber 11. On the other hand, a gaseous raw material of carbon is introduced into the chamber 11. A CO2 laser beam is condensed from a light source 8 and the surface of the glass fiber 2 is irradiated with this laser beam through a window 10 of ZnSe and is heated, by which a carbon thin film 4 is formed thereon. The carbon thin films 4 are respectively formed similarly on the other fibers as well. The end faces of the optical fibers 1 are disposed to face each other and the parts of the thin films 4 are placed on the grooves of an axis alignment base and are fixed by clampers. Four pieces of the fibers are simultaneously fusion spliced by a discharge means.

The gaseous raw materials are simultaneously introduced form the plural introducing pipes 25a to 25d into the reaction chamber 25 and the flow rates, compsns., temps., etc., of the gaseous raw materials are adjusted by each introducing pipe. The hermetic coated optical fiber 3 having excellent tensile strength, hydrogen resistance characteristic, etc., is produced in this way.

CONSTITUTION:Carbon on the end part of an optical fiber 1 that is carbon- coated, is removed, and fusion-connection is carried out, and after a metal coating 3 is formed on a removed connected part 2, the metal coating 3 is primarily and secondarily heated. Means for primariy and secondary heating is preferred to be infrared heating, high frequency induction heating or laser light heating, since only parts of the metal coating 3 are locally heated. When the temperature of primary heating is 0.1-1.0 times or preferably 0.3-0.6 times as much as the melting point (absolute temperature) of the metal coating 3, it is effective that the temperature of secondary heating is at east greater by 50 deg.C or more than that of primary heating. For the deposition of the metal coating 3, electroless plating, sputtering, vacuum deposition, or plasma CVD is preferred.
