    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enhance reliability and to improve durability by separating a pinch-roller from a capstan periodically when repositioning is performed at the time of recording and performing repositioning while making the pinch-roller to be in press-contact with the capstan at the time of reproduction to read out data quickly. SOLUTION: When data are to be recorded on a magnetic tape 3 with respect to a tape driving device 1, a pinch-roller 26 is separated from a capstan 27 in accordance with a repositioning by considering the deviation of the height of a magnetic tape 3 due to the repositioning. When data are supplied from the external equipment of a host computer 30 or the like in a standby state, the pinch-roller 26 is made to be in 'off' to be separated from the capstan 27. Next, the pinch-roller 26 becomes to be in press-contact again to start the recording of data. At the time of recording, the off of the poinch-roller 26 is periodically performed so as to become the extent of one time every time a normal reposition is performed 50 times. Repositioning at the time of reproduction is performed always by making the pinch-roller 26 to be in 'on' state.

    • PURPOSE: To simplify a structure, to miniaturize a device and to assure switching to respective operation modes by providing the mode changeover cam of a mode changeover mechanism section with a first annular cam groove and a second annular cam groove part. CONSTITUTION: The mode changeover cam 39 to be driven by a mode changeover motor is provided with the first annular cam groove 40 and the second annular cam groove 41. The first annular cam groove 40 drives a head driving mechanism section 17 to move and operate a magnetic head device to a play mode position where recording and reproducing operations to a magnetic tape are made possible, a stop mode position where the traveling operation of the magnetic tape is stopped and an ejection position where the insertion and removal operations of a tape cassette 100 are made possible. The second annular cam groove 41 engages the first changeover cam lever 52 to operate the magnetic tape to change over its traveling direction at the time of a play mode and the second changeover cam lever 57 to operate the magnetic tape to change over its traveling direction at the time of a stop mode.
