By reducing the total number of vectors, other processing times are also reduced and the processing time is reduced as a whole.

CONSTITUTION:A 1st arithmetic means calculates the area S of a triangle from the difference between the coordinate values X0 and X1 of two intersections when the vector data cross the scan lines Y0 and Y1. An edge deciding means decides the type of an edge, i.e., decides whether the vector data show the right or left edge. Then a 2nd arithmetic means calculates the area rate of each unit part picture element based on the values X0 and X1, the area S, and the type of the edge. Thus the area S is obtained at a high speed. In particular, the area rate is accurately obtained in the form of an ideal numerical value at a normal vector edge part having no edge point. As a result, the area rate can be obtained at a high speed without performing the division of subpixels nor counting the number of area-filled subpixels.

Namely, the density is compared with the right and left picture elements or five picture elements including three picture elements in read adjacent lines and when the density is lower than the other density, the density of any one of adjacent picture elements or the average value of outputs A and C is defined as Dn. When the density is out of the range of outputs A and C, the intermediate value is defined as Dn. In the other case, the output B is defined as Dn. Thus, the picture quality is not lowered by running out of the density of an edge part from the area density on both of sides.
