    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electrolytic diaphragm which has excellent ion permeability, has a low percentage change in surface area during use, and makes it possible to prevent a voltage increase due to adhesion of gas to the surface of the diaphragm, the gas being generated at electrodes during electrolysis.SOLUTION: The electrolytic diaphragm comprises an ion-permeable membrane and can be wetted by an aqueous solution of potassium hydroxide having a concentration of 30 wt.%. The mean pore diameter of the ion-permeable membrane is between 0.01 μm and 20 μm, and when the ion-permeable membrane is immersed in purified water, the surface area thereof changes by 20% or less. In a preferred embodiment, the electrical resistivity of the ion-permeable membrane, when an aqueous solution of potassium hydroxide is used as the electrolyte at a temperature of 25°C and a concentration of 40 wt.%, is 0.5 Ω cmor less.
