    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To surely fix and hold a variable valve gear to a desired intermediate operating angle by a simple configuration for fail-safe or a next start of an internal combustion engine.
      SOLUTION: A first variable valve train 5 capable of continuously variably controlling an operating angle determines the operating angle by varying the rotating position of a control shaft 32 by an actuator. An engagement hole 54 is formed in the stopper plate 51 of the control shaft 32. A stopper pin 55 projecting when the supply of oil is cut off is installed on a cylinder head. The stopper plate and the stopper are engageable with each other at a predetermined intermediate operating angle. When a system fails, the stopper pin 55 is made to project, the control shaft 32 is temporarily moved to the large operating angle side, and the stopper pin 55 is engaged with the engagement hole 54 by utilizing the gradual return of the control shaft 32 to the small operating angle side by the reaction force of a valve spring. Consequently, the structure of the stopper is simplified.

      SOLUTION: A control shaft of the variable valve gear device 1 includes: a journal portion 12a rotatably supported by a control shaft bearing portion 23 arranged on a main body side of an internal combustion engine; and a flange portion 24 arranged adjacently to the journal portion 12a and projecting from an outer peripheral surface of the control shaft 12 so as to restrict the control shaft 12 from moving in the axial direction thereof. The flange portion 24 is rotatably supported by a flange receiving portion 25 arranged on the main body side of the internal combustion engine. A stopper projection piece 26 for restricting a range of rotation of the control shaft 12 is formed on an outer periphery of the flange portion 24. The stopper projection piece 26 is projected outwardly in the radial direction of the control shaft. Thus, since the stopper projection piece 26 is formed on the flange portion 24, the size of the variable valve gear device 1 can be reduced as a whole and it is possible to improve the assemblability of the variable valve gar device 1.
