摘要： PURPOSE:To improve wide-band characteristics and transmission characteristics by adding fluorine between a core and a clad and forming an intermediate layer which has a lower refractive index than the clad, and adding fluorine to the core as well and varying the refractive index between the intermediate layer and core. CONSTITUTION:Gaseous raw materials for glass formation are mixed and supplied to a multiple-tube burner. Combustion gas and combustion improving gas are supplied to its outside to cause flame hydrolysis reaction. Produced glass particulates are deposited to grow a porous base material axially, and the refractive index is increased gradually to the center. At the same time, fluorine is added uniformly to the porous base material to form the core 1 outside of the part corresponding to the core 1 and the intermediate layer which has a continuous refractive index distribution and is lower in refractive index than the clad 3. The obtained porous base material is heated and sintered in an inert gas atmosphere to form a transparent preform. Then, the material is inserted into a quartz tube as the clad 3, and heated and drawn to obtain a thin optical fiber.

摘要： PURPOSE:To enable production of a titled preform stably for a long period of time without damaging nozzles by providing a nozzle for ejecting inert gas between a nozzle for ejecting H2 and a nozzle for ejecting O2. CONSTITUTION:SiCl4, GeCl4 and H2 are ejected from the central nozzle 1 of a multiple-pipe burner, SiCl4 and H2 from the 2nd nozzle 3, Ar from the 3rd nozzle 3 and O2 from the 4th nozzle 4 to a starting material, by which a porous base mterial is produced. If inert gas such as gaseous Ar (except Rn) is ejected for the purpose of shielding H2 and O2 for an extra short time at a flow rate of 0.1-1.5m/sec in the above-mentioned way, the nozzle tip part is overheated and is kept in a reducting atmosphere. The danger of inducing a damage in an early period is eliminated and therefore the titled preform is produced with good productivity and stable quality and operating condition for a long period of time.

摘要： PURPOSE:When gases of glass raw materials are burned, the gases are irradiated with ultraviolet rays and ultrasonic waves and activated to effect rapid accumulation of glass fine particles on the deposition starting part in a short time, thus producing the parent material for optical fiber. CONSTITUTION:The deposition starting part 11 is hung in the furnace 10 and the gas-feeding opening 13 is formed on the upper part, while the exhausting opening 14 is on the lower part. Further, the ultrasonic wave projector 15 and the ultraviolet ray projector 16 are set so that they turn toward the opening of the burner 12 or the bottom of the starting part 11. In the above arrangements, starting gases such as SiCl4 or so are fed together with burning gases such as hydrogen and oxygen to the burner 12 to form fine particles of glass by flame hydrolysis and accumulate the particles on the bottom of the starting material 11, thus producing a porous parent material 18. At this time, ultrasonic waves and ultraviolet rays are applied to the flame to promote the diffusion and mixing of the starting gases and the burning gases and the l irradiation of ultraviolet rays activates the starting material gases. As a resut, the reactivity is increased to complete the reactions in the high-speed gas blown from the burner 12 in a short time.

The GeCl solution and SiCl4 solution are pumped with the pumps 24 and 25 through the feed pipes 22 and 23 to the heating chambers 26 and 27, and dropped to the upper surfaces of the heaters 28 and 29 heated at definite temperatures. The GeCl4 solution and SiCl4 solution and are evaporated immediately on dripping to the heaters, and fill in respective chambers. The evaporated raw material gases are sent to the combustion burner through the outlets 13, 14 and the feed pipes.

A silicon oxide glass doped with a dopant has lowered melting temperature, and the decrease in the melting temperature is most significant in the glass doped with phosphorus followed by the one doped with boron. Boron decreases the refractive index of silicon oxide in contrast with the other dopants.

In this optical fiber coupler, light made incident on one core 4-1 is firstly transmitted to the core 5-1' while it passes through the coupling part, and transmitted to the core 5-1 while it advances further. In the case that coupling still continues, the light returns to the core 5-1' from the core 5-1 again. Therefore, the intercepting area is made wider by causing the coupling among three or more cores.
