    • PURPOSE:To reduce the time for heat treatments in the state of tempering of thick steel plates to be hardened and tempered by setting the temp. of a furnace at a temp. higher than the target tempering temp., and ending the tempering when the central temp. of the steel plates attains the desired tempering temp. CONSTITUTION:Steel plates are inserted into a furnace of which the atmosphere is set at >=700 deg.C. When the central temp. of the steel plates attains a desired temp., the steel plates are removed immediately from the furnace. Then larger differences than those in the prior art are produced in the surface parts and central parts of the steel plates between the tempering stage and the time when the tempering ends; the temp. is higher in the surface parts. Therefore the allowances for the decrease in the surface hardness occured in the stage of hardening by tempering increase and eventually the hardness distributions in the thickness direction when the tempering ends flatten equal to or more than those in the prior art. Here the reason for limiting the furnace temp. lies in that the steel plates are heated in a shorter time. The higher furnace temp. is more preferable, but ordinary tempering temp. is lower than Ac1 and the purpose for said limitation is to heat the plates in the time shorter than that at said temp. The upper limit of the furnace temp. is determined by restrictions in the construction and equipment of the furnace.

    • PURPOSE:To obtain desired strength on all steel plate materials regardless of plate thickness, by rolling the steel containing each prescribed amount of C, Si, Mn and Al at a prescribed temperature and by cooling it uniformly at a prescribed water amount density. CONSTITUTION:The steel comprising 0.3% or less C, 1% or less Si, 2.5% or less Mn, 0.1% or less Al and the remainder of Fe is heated at over 1,000 deg.C, and then the heated steel is rolled so that the temperature of the steel when its rolling is completed becomes under 900 deg.C. Subsequently, the rolled steel is cooled with water at a water amount density of 0.7+ or -0.3m /min.m per one side. The steel thus obtained has a constant level of strength on all plate thickness regardless of plate thickness.
