    • PURPOSE:To surely and satisfactorily display two patterns which partly overlap by devising the shapes and positions of electrodes. CONSTITUTION:The ITO electrodes 3, 4, Si3N4 films 81, 82, the ITO electrodes 1, 2, and oriented films 91, 92 are superposed on the opposite surfaces of transparent glass plates 6, 7 which sandwich a liquid crystal L. The electrodes 1, 2 have apertures 1a, 2a respectively coinciding with the patterns PA1, PA2. Leads 11, 21, 31, 41 are attached to the electrodes 1-4 and the liquid crystal is driven by an AC power supply 53 via switches 51, 52. The driving electric field in the liquid crystal L is generated only in the part of the electrode 3 facing the aperture 1a and between the electrodes 2 and 4 facing this part and the liquid crystal shows the pattern PA1 when a voltage is impressed to the electrode 3 by throwing a switch 51 at a contact A and the electrode 4 is grounded by throwing a switch 52 at a contact B. The liquid crystal shows the pattern PA1 when the switches 51, 52 are thrown respectively at the contacts B, A. Since the need for installing lead electrodes to the position facing the liquid crystal, the unnecessary driving of the liquid crystal does not arise.

    • PURPOSE:To prevent the generation of disturbance in orientation by adding spacers beforehand in an orienting material and applying the orientation material simultaneously on the inside surfaces of substrates provided with electrodes, printing an adhesive sealant thereon and subjecting the oriented films to a treatment for providing orientation performance to said films. CONSTITUTION:Transparent conductive electrodes 23 and 27 are formed on the inside surfaces of glass substrates 21a and 21b, and an oriented film 24b is coated and formed on the substrate 21b. An orientation material added beforehand with spacers 25 in the orientation material is coated on one glass substrate 21a to form an oriented film 24a. An adhesive is seal printed to form a sealing wall 22 and after the adhesive is allowed to react to a semi-cured state (state B), the temp. is decreased to an ordinary temp. and rubbing or the other treatment to apply orientation performance is applied on the films 24a and 24b; thereafter, the two substrates 21a and 21b are superposed so that the inside surfaces thereof face each other through a narrow space.

    • PURPOSE:To make it possible to obtain a distant information of an obstacle in the rear of a vehicle while observing a rear view mirror, by displaying the distant information on a display area in the rear view mirror by means of the obstacle displaying intruction of a switching means in association with a rear obstacle detection signal from a rear obstacle detecting means. CONSTITUTION:An ultrasonic transmitting and receiving unit 3 detects an obstacle in the rear of a vehicle, a processor 2 computes the distance to the obstacle in the rear of the vehicle, and a switching means issues a display instruction to display the distant information from the processor 2 on a display area 1 in a rear view mirror 10 which is provided with a liquid crystal non-glaring mirror 121 and a rear obstacle display area 122 composed of a transparent substrate 20 made of, for example, glass, a transparent electrode 21 formed on one side of the former, a field effect type liquid crystal 22 whose transparency is changed in accordance with applied voltages, a transparent electrode layer 23, a transparent substrate 24 and a reflective layer 25. When the switching means applies no distant information voltage, the liquid crystal 22 is made transparent to act as a mirror. Thus, the distant informaton may obtained while the rear view mirror is observed.
