When the above reaction is performed in a vapor phase and the component B is a dimer obtained by the aldol condensation, or more concretely when producing 2-ethylhexanol by the vapor phase hydrogenation reaction of (C) 2-ethyl-2-hexenal in the presence of a catalyst, it is preferable to simultaneously feed the component C and (D) butyraldehyde into the reaction system and to simultaneously produce 2-ethylhexanol and butyl alcohol.
