    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a grinding apparatus and a method for forming a ground product, which apparatus and method can reduce the size of an un-machined region produced at a connecting portion of a convex surface portion and a flat surface portion, and can carry out a grinding operation in a short time.
      SOLUTION: The grinding apparatus comprises a work spindle 22 for rotating a workpiece 4 having an outer surface forming portion 2 and an optical surface forming portion 1 about the axis of the workpiece 4, a rotary table 24, a grinding wheel 6 arranged on the rotary table 24 via a tool spindle 26, and first and second traverse tables 21, 23 for advancing the grinding wheel 6. The rotary table 24 can change the direction of the rotation axis 6c of the grinding wheel 6. When the grinding operation is carried out for the connecting portion of the outer surface forming portion 2 and the optical surface forming portion 1, the grinding wheel 6 and the tool spindle 26 are arranged such that the radial direction of the workpiece 4 is in parallel with the rotation axis 6c of the grinding wheel 6. When the grinding operation is carried out for the portions except the connecting portion, the grinding wheel 6 and the tool spindle 26 are arranged such that the radial direction of the workpiece 4 is perpendicular to the rotation axis 6c.
