    • PURPOSE:To rise light output speedily regardless of a lighting or lights-out condition, and also prevent the excessive light output in a discharge lamp lighting device to control lighting of a discharge lamp. CONSTITUTION:When a direct current electric power supply 1 is turned on, an inverter circuit 2 oscillates. When output of the direct current electric power supply 1 reaches prescribe voltage, a lighting control circuit 8 receives output of a direct current voltage detecting circuit 7, and operates a startup circuit 4. Thereby, a discharge lamp 5 is started, and when an electric current is flowed to the lamp, voltage on both ends of the discharge lamp 5 is lowered, and voltage of the direct current electric power supply 1 is also lowered. From this voltage drop, a direct current voltage detecting circuit 6 detects the fact that the discharge lamp 5 is started, and stops operation of the startup circuit 4. After the discharge lamp 5 is started, the lighting control circuit 8 controls the output of the direct current electric power supply 1 according to a lighting time and a lights-out time, and the output immediately after the lamp is started is increased as the lights-out time becomes long, and after the lamp is once started, the output is decreased with the lapse of time, and rated lighting can be carried out soon.

    • PURPOSE:To better the starting performance of a discharge lamp by applying a power supply output voltage to the primary winding of a transformer whose secondary winding functions as a current limiting obstruction, and generating a voltage in the secondary winding so as to boost the voltage to be supplied to the discharge lamp in its start. CONSTITUTION:The primary winding of a transformer 12 is connected to the secondary winding of a transformer 22 in parallel so that the output voltage of a constant current push-pull inverter circuit 17 which is generated in the secondary winding of the transformer 22 is applied to both sides of the primary winding of the transformer 12. Then not only the output voltage of the constant current push-pull inverter circuit 17 divided in accordance with the impedance that the secondary winding of the transformer 12 originally has, but also a voltage which is boosted in accordance with the turn ratio of the primary and the secondary winding of the transformer 12 are superimposed on the secondary winding of the transformer 12. Thus, the relative output voltage of a power supply unit 11 is boosted and supplied to a discharge lamp 14 during its start so that a shift from glow discharge to arc discharge can be performed smoothly and stable lighting can be facilitated.

    • PURPOSE:To avoid an overload input at the time of normal starting and inhibit deterioration of a spark gap so as to prevent life-shortening of a lighting device by changing the condition of a pulse voltage applied to a discharge lamp at the time of its starting and re-starting. CONSTITUTION:In a normal temperature state, a variable resistant element 18 has a resistant value capable of generating a pulse number required for normally starting a discharge lamp, while a shape memory alloy 16 maintains such a shape that the distance between electrodes 14 and 15 of a spark gap 13 generates a pulse voltage required for normally starting the lamp. When the lamp is at a high temperature, the element 18 and the alloy 16 detect heat, respectively, so that the resistant value of the element 18 becomes smaller so as to decrease the constant at the time of charging of a charging circuit 17, while the alloy 16 changes its form so as to widen the distance between the electrodes 14 and 15 of the spark gap 13. Therefore, this can prevent an overload input at the time of normal starting, thereby inhibiting deterioration of the spark gap so as to prevent life-shortening of a lighting device.
